Baker to Vegas via wheelchair
By GINA B. GOOD
Scott Pfeiffer's entourage rolled through Pahrump last week in his successful bid to ride his wheelchair from Baker to Las Vegas to publicize ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Pfeiffer's determination paid off when he attended the NASCAR races on Sunday. Pfeiffer was accompanied by his parents, Tim and Carol, and his brother Jeff, along with his medical caregiver, Rick Flynn. The group was pleasantly taken by surprise when Saddle West Hotel donated connecting wheelchair accessible rooms and all the meals for their two-night stay in Pahrump. At times, team members ride bikes next to Pfeiffer, who is unable to use his hands to grasp items, to make certain he stays hydrated and doesn't get overly tired. However, on the blustery morning of Feb. 24, Pfeiffer was eager and tan from the previous day's ride from Shoshone, Calif., wearing a T-shirt and shorts. The first two days of his trip, he rode a total of 81 miles in his motorized chair and was ready to head toward Las Vegas. "We started this on faith," said Carol Pfeiffer. "He is only doing this one trip. "We're just like a race team," she continued. "We have a spare chair and a charger for the generator on the chair." The Ability Center of Las Vegas loaned the Pfeiffer family an equipment van. "The ALS organization has been very generous, and we feel so welcome here in Pahrump by Saddle West," said Carol Pfeiffer. "Everyone has been very friendly in this town." |
