Ordinance won't require pickup

The ubiquitous green trucks stopping by homes all over the valley don't necessarily have to stop at yours.

"There are a lot of people in town who have the time to take their own trash to the dump," said Town Manager Bill Kohbarger Friday. "The town board was very adamant about preserving people's right to do that, and they made it clear at the last town meeting."

According to Kohbarger, who has never lived any place where trash pickup was not mandated, "The topic has been bubbling on the back burner for a long time, beginning before I actually got to town.

"We have to protect the property rights of everybody. When you live in a nice area and have one person stockpiling trash or junk on their property, it brings down the property value," Kohbarger maintained.

"I just want trash to be removed from people's property.

"Haul it or hire Pahrump Valley Disposal. The new wording in the PTO protects everybody. You either pay for a service or self-haul.

"I think from listening to the people of this community, it will make them happy. When the residents are happy, I'm happy.

"It's simple and to the point. People are not required to have their trash picked up if they want to self-haul."
