The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Southern Nye County 4-H Culture Club is seeking youth age 9 and up who want to learn to knit or crochet.

Currently, this 4-H project group meets at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Vacation Bible School

Central Valley Baptist Church

June 29 -- July 3: Monday-Friday, 1-3 p.m.

Signups are starting now for ages 3 to kindergarten and grades one through three and grades four through six.

There will be a family barbecue at 5 p.m., July 3 for all students and parents.

The Way Baptist Fellowship

Choice Hills Baptist Church

June 22 -- June 26, 9 a.m. to noon, ages kindergarten through eighth grade.

Computer Users Group meets

The Pahrump Computer Users will meet at 1 p.m., July 6 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

Mike Irwin will discuss backing-up computer data while Don will be on vacation.

Parking is urged in the rear of the library where there is ample room. Handicapped parking is still in the front.

The meeting is free. Anyone wishing to become a member may pay $5 at check in and collect a raffle ticket.

Beatty summer reading program

The 2009 Beatty Library summer reading program will begin with sign-up at 3 p.m., June 30 at the library.

The theme this year will be "Be Creative @ Your Library."

The program is open to children between the ages of 5 and 13 and will be held at 3 p.m. each Tuesday in July.

Aug. 4 will be the final day of the program which includes story time and activities.

New Hope enrollment

New Hope Christian Academy is accepting enrollment in pre-kindergarten for 3- and 4-year-olds for the little Froggors learning center.

'We the People, the Musical'

Tickets are on sale now for the Shadow Mountain Community Players production of "We the People, the Musical."

The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.

The show will be at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., July 4 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center.

Tickets may be purchased at Secret Sisters Boutique, Pahrump Community Library, Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce office and at the door.

Beatty Library grant

The Beatty Library has received a $5,000 grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) for new public access computers, staff computers and a new server.

Model Railroad meeting

The Pahrump Model Railroad group will meet at 9 a.m. June 27 at the United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

All train enthusiasts are welcome, as are all gauges.

Fundraiser

Satellite Systems of Nevada will hold a fundraiser 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 26 and 27, at 1360 E. Highway 372, to benefit the Pahrump Valley Baseball Association to help the All-Star teams travel to Northern Nevada.

There will be raffles for amazing prizes and tickets will sell for $1 each or six for $5.

The drawings will be Sunday and ticket holders do not have to be present to win.

There will be free hot dogs, popcorn and brain freeze, plus bounce house, pitch burst and more.

Donations appreciated.

The Pahrump Chamber of Commerce will host the "We the People" Jubilee starting at 10 a.m. July 4 at the Pahrump Nugget.

Debut concert

Freedom of Praise Ministries will present the Pahrump Valley Gospel Choir in a debut concert at 6 p.m. June, 26 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The choir is under the direction of minister, George Ferguson.

Eagle Scout blood drive

Dustin Ward's Eagle Scout project is a blood drive to be held 8 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., June 27 at the LDS cultural hall, 921 E. Wilson Road.

Each donor will receive free tickets to the Area 51 baseball game at Cashman Field and a free pen to commemorate donating.

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis will hold a yard sale 7 a.m. to noon, June 27 at 3881 Terry Dr., off of Simpkins Road.

The proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

P.O.S.S. schedule

* This nonprofit organization is looking for sponsors for the buckle show, regular shows and year-end awards. Donations are deductible and businesses will receive advertising on the Web site and at the shows.

* The buckle show is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 27 in Mc Cullough Arena. The judge will be Todd Goodwin of Sandy Valley.

Women's self-defense class

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes will sponsor a two-day self-defense class for women 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 27 and 28 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

G.R.E.A.T. Summer Program

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and NyE Communities Coalition will pre-register the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) noon to 4 p.m., July 4 in Honeysuckle Park.

The program runs from 8 a.m. to noon each day, July 5, 6 and 10 in the park.

There is no fee for youth participation.

GREAT facilitates positive relationships between law enforcement, families and the community while encouraging youth to prevent violence, manage anger, resist peer pressure and resist gang involvement.

Sheriff Tony DeMeo will hold public open forums at Wulfy's Sports Bar at 1 p.m. on the following dates:

Chamber for June

The following events are being sponsored by the Pahrump Chamber of Commerce for June:

* July 3 -- Community Family Picnic, 4 p.m., Petrack Park.

This is the pre-celebration for the annual fireworks show. Games, food and beverages will be available.

Bring chairs or a blanket and a picnic for the fireworks show at 9 p.m.

Volunteers for the games are needed. Call the chamber.

* July 4 -- "We the People" Jubilee, 10 a.m. until the fireworks at the Pahrump Nugget.

Games and vendors, live entertainment and a musical play "We the People," presented by the Shadow Mountain Community Players. The play will be staged at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

* July 9 -- July business meeting, 11:45 a.m., Great Basin College-Basin Campus.

Bill Verbeck of GBC and Diane Lake of JobConnect will present their partnership and the benefit to Pahrump and Nye County.

The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

WestCare and the International House of Blues Foundation will offer free guitar classes to children ages 12 to 18, beginning July 9.

'Hoodie' drive

NyE Communities Coalition Holiday Task Force is sponsoring a hooded sweatshirt drive now through July 31.

All sizes, either zippered or pull-over, new or gently used, are needed. They will be given in the fall to students in need of warm outer wear.

Donations will be accepted 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Boys and Girls Club of Pahrump, 2210 S. Mt. Charleston Dr.

Paint PV Purple

Relay for Life will host a Paint Pahrump Valley Purple event on July 10. Everyone is encouraged to display purple bows on vehicles, mailboxes, light posts, etc., in support of Relay for Life.

There will be a gathering 7:30-9 p.m. in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot July 10 followed by a candlelight vigil in honor of those who lost the battle with cancer.

Purple bows are available at the Relay for Life booth during the We the People Jubilee, July 4 at the Nugget.

All proceeds benefit Relay for Life.

Soroptimists raffle

Soroptimist International Pahrump Valley is having a $1,000 raffle for either a gas card or a Home Depot card.

The tickets are $10 each and only 400 are available. The winner will be selected Sept. 1.

Proceeds help continue programs to help women and girls promote betterment of their lives and commitment to the community.

Hafen Elementary registration

Hafen Elementary School will hold registration for new students 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 3.

Bring birth certificates, up-to-date shot records, address verification (utility bill, mortgage or rent receipt), parent or guardian photo ID and custody papers if applicable.

School begins Aug. 24 for early childhood and grades one through five.

Kindergartners will be assessed Aug. 24-26.

New student orientation will be at 6 p.m., Aug. 19 and an open house will be at 6 p.m., Sept. 2.

Relay for Life

Relay for Life, Pahrump Valley, will hold the annual run/walk Aug. 15 and 16 at Petrack Park.

All money raised before, during and after the event will stay here for cancer services.

The American Cancer Society has a gift closet at Desert View Hospital where cancer patients can get wigs, supplements and other items.

Patients may also apply for gas cards and gift Visa cards to help during treatments. For more information go to www.cancer.org.

Drivers are needed to transport patients to appointments and treatments. The service depends on local support.

Burn moratorium
