Chip sealing begins
By MARK WAITE
It looks like a simple technology: use a truck to lay down some oil, spread some stones on top of it and follow it up with a roller truck to flatten the stones. Thus the chip seal, a method that's been used to pave hundreds of miles every year. While many Pahrump residents welcome the chip sealing of their street to eliminate those dusty cars, the main impetus is to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandates on dust abatement in Pahrump Valley or suffer the consequences of being listed as a non-attainment area. Wulfenstein Construction Co. normally wins the bid every year. The long-time Pahrump paving company began this year's chip seal program Monday morning on the extreme south end of town, near the brothels, in Calvada Unit 14. Company president Jim Wulfenstein said the beginning of triple-digit heat in Pahrump this week is ideal weather for the chip seal program. Last April, Nye County commissioners voted to approve a revised chip seal program for Pahrump, Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Crystal with a price tag of only $1.22 million, instead of the original $2.5 million program approved in July 2008. Part of the program cost will be extended into the 2009-10 fiscal year which begins July 1. The 2009-10 program is targeting 22.66 miles of road, or 119,636 linear feet. The chip seal list includes: On the far west side, a number of streets will be chip-sealed from Corbin Street to the end, in quarter-mile or half-mile segments. They include Assay Lane, Beniah Street, Betty Avenue, Emma Street , Gerald Street, Grubstake Lane, Ingot Lane, Joshua Lane, Placer Lane and Victoria Street. Woodchips Road will be chip sealed from Schifrin Street to the end of the pavement. To the east, crews will chip seal a half-mile of Basin Avenue from Powerline Road to Higley Road. The longer sections will be a mile each of Golden Valley Avenue and Sunland Avenue from Manse Road to Thousandaire Boulevard. Heritage Drive from Malibou Avenue to Golden Valley Avenue is on the list. Also targeted is Malibou Avenue from Thousandaire Boulevard to the end.
