Handy takes place on Beatty's board
By RICHARD STEPHENS
Kay Handy won the informal election held at the Beatty Town Advisory Board's June 24 meeting to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Joe White from the board. Handy, who previously filled a vacancy on the board in 2005 and served as chairman in 2006, received 102 votes. Terry Kerfess, who served on the board from 2000-2004, received 36 votes. Both candidates said their objective is to be the voice of the people of the community. Handy said that she would "look at action items objectively" and "listen to the community first and foremost." Kerfess, who currently works as a maintenance man at Janda Ribbons, said that he had "no special interests, and no agenda of my own." Handy is a native of Beatty and a graduate of Beatty High School. She is the manager of the Bank of America branch in Beatty. The board will forward Handy's name to the county commissioners for appointment. The rest of the meeting consisted of routine matters, mainly the signing of vouchers. At the suggestion of Teresa Sullivan, the board did schedule a workshop for Saturday, July 25, at 9:00 a.m. to revise bylaws and policies. |
