Weekend roundup
By CHARLENE DEAN
Those looking for something to do this weekend had better break out the Palm Pilot scheduler and buckle the seat belts. There's something going on everywhere and something to appeal to everyone -- even the younger set. FRIDAY * There's a rock band called Onara playing Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall. Patrons still have to be 21, but the music appeals to the younger crowd. There is no cover and the band starts at 10:30 p.m. * Charlie's Place (Our Bar) will host a "Rocky Horror" showing at midnight. Costumes and audience participation are encouraged. * Free Swim Teen Night is happening 6-8 p.m. at the community pool. The event is alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free and open to youth 13 to 18. * If you like art and haven't visited the library lately, catch the display and artist reception for Stenmark Toy at 1-3 p.m. today. Light refreshments will be served. Twenty-three portraits of local people will be on display until July 31. * The Pahrump Valley Gospel Choir will give their debut performance at 6 p.m. in the Bob Ruud Community Center. SATURDAY * Threadzfest, the annual sports competition and music festival sponsored by Ace Hardware, will start at noon with the skateboard and bike competitions followed by nine bands which will keep Honeysuckle Park rockin' until 10 p.m. This is a great event for the young and young at heart. Food and sports vendors will be set up as well. * Wulfy's is having a barbecue in the courtyard area and a free concert with "Heat of the Night" providing the music. The event runs 6-10 p.m. * The Pahrump Equestrian Trail Riding Association (PETRA) is having a trail ride up Wheeler Wash. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. behind Wheeler Springs Plaza. The cost is $18 for the family or $13 for individuals. The fee also covers six-months membership in the association. PETRA organizes rides for charity, conditioning rides for the Pony Express Trail Ride and conducts classes and seminars. * "Off the Grid" opens at the Goldwell Museum in Rhyolite at 6 p.m., with a demonstration in the use of renewable energy as art. More information is available at www.goldwellmuseum. org. * There will be a Children's Fair at Wells Fargo Bank on Highway 160 with financial information, games, fingerprinting (10 a.m.-noon) and fun. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. * "Dancing With the Stars" will start at 7 p.m. at the Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall. Local celebrities team up with dancers to perform for the public in an effort to raise money for Relay For Life. * ARES/RACES Field Day starts at noon Saturday and runs for a solid 24 hours. This is the time when local amateur radio operators get to show off their communications technologies and efficiency. The event will take place at the emergency services office, 1510 Siri Lane. SUNDAY * Nye Gold Seekers will hold a gold-panning class at Gotta Getta Map, 361 S. Frontage Road in the Hollywood Plaza. Get hands-on instruction and help with the pioneer method of panning. The classes are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and for a small fee, you can keep what you find. * Charlie's Place (Our Bar) is in the action again Sunday with a murder mystery theater, "The Chicago Caper." The show starts at 6 p.m. * The community pool is again open for a free swim from noon to 6 p.m. The swim is sponsored by Pahrump Valley Cruisers Car Club and is open to everyone. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. ___ Don't forget the free swim night for the family 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at the pool and Saddle West has added karaoke and live music to the entertainment in the pool area. Karaoke is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and The Boltons perform 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Have a good weekend. |
