Hazelwood going to WSOP tourneyPVT Ray Hazelwood was the fifth and final area qualifier for the 40th annual World Series of Poker, winning a final table Friday night at the Club MVC in the Mountain View Casino. Hazelwood outlasted Carl Torelli, Frank Polansky, Andy Guetis, Charley Rehl, Butch Dole, Don McDermott, Mike Fortin, Jim Gianino and Art Page to earn the seat for Event 51, a $1,500 buy-in no-limit tournament to be played Saturday at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Jim Bahler, the fourth Pahrump Valley resident to qualify for the WSOP, played last weekend, but did not cash. Previous qualifiers were Honey McDonald, Mike Bartley and Steve Reiser NOTES -- Thus far, Jeff Von Alst, the poker room manager at the Nugget, is the lone local player to cash at the WSOP, earning $4,088 in the Casino Employees event in May ... United States players have won 27 bracelets and earned $53,203,306 in the 40th annual World Series of Poker ... The total prize pool was at $84,861,138 Tuesday morning ... California players have earned $9,381,639, while Nevadans are at $8,953,235 ... The WSOP Player of the Year points co-leaders are Jeffrey Lisandro and Ville Wahlbeck; third is Phil Ivey ... Daniel Negreanu is 10th ... Times Sports Editor Don McDermott will play in the WSOP Media Charity Poker tournament at the Rio July 9, starting at 1 p.m. ... The tournament is using the Dream Team format this year ... Harrah's is donating $10,000 to the Nevada Cancer Institute in the name of the winners ... Both individual and team champions will be determined in the Texas hold'em no-limit event ... McDermott will play with the Nuuz Hounds, with KNUU radio hosts Andy Vierra and Kahala Carter as his teammates ... All players will receive team jerseys, with their names across the back. ... The Dream Team tournament itself will be played July 12-13 at the Rio. |
