Paint PV Purple

Relay for Life will host a Paint Pahrump Valley Purple event on July 10. Everyone is encouraged to display purple bows on vehicles, mailboxes, light posts, etc., in support of Relay for Life.

There will be a gathering 7:30-9 p.m. in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot July 10 followed by a candlelight vigil in honor of those who lost the battle with cancer.

Purple bows are available at the Relay for Life booth during the We the People Jubilee, July 4 at the Nugget.

All proceeds benefit Relay for Life.

Computer Users Group meets

The Pahrump Computer Users will meet at 1 p.m., July 6 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

Mike Irwin will discuss backing-up computer data while Don will be on vacation.

Parking is urged in the rear of the library where there is ample room. Handicapped parking is still in the front.

The meeting is free. Anyone wishing to become a member may pay $5 at check in and collect a raffle ticket.

Gold-panning class

Nye Gold Seekers will have a gold-panning class 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27 in the parking lot of Gotta Getta Map, 361 S. Frontage Road.

Learn to pan like the old-timers and for a small fee, keep what is found.

The VFW on Homestead Road has an ongoing schedule of events.

Breakfast, 8-11 a.m., Sundays.

Panini special, Mondays, $6 plate.

Hamburger Night 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesdays, $6 plate includes salad or potato salad and chips.

Dinner, 5-7 p.m., Fridays, $7 eat-in and $7.50 carry out.

Swap Meet, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., second and fourth Saturdays, $10 for space and table or $7 for just space.

Free guitar classes

WestCare and the International House of Blues Foundation will offer free guitar classes to children ages 12 to 18, beginning July 9.

Children's Fair

Wells Fargo will host a children's fair 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27 at the bank, 520 S. Highway 160.

Wells Fargo bankers will be on hand to answer questions about financial services, including children's savings accounts.

Representatives from Nye County Fire-Rescue Services, D.A.R.E., and the swimming district will be on hand to answer questions and share tips for a safe summer.

Light refreshments will be available.

Fundraiser

Satellite Systems of Nevada will hold a fundraiser 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 26 and 27, at 1360 E. Highway 372, to benefit the Pahrump Valley Baseball Association to help the All-Star teams travel to Northern Nevada.

There will be raffles for amazing prizes and tickets will sell for $1 each or six for $5.

The drawings will be Sunday and ticket holders do not have to be present to win.

There will be free hot dogs, popcorn and brain freeze, plus bounce house, pitch burst and more.

Donations appreciated.

Children's bereavement camp

Nathan Adelson Hospice has openings for a children's bereavement camp for ages 7-12, Aug. 14-16 at Torino Ranch in Lovell Canyon.

The deadline for applications is July 1.

RCMS registration

Rosemary Clarke Middle School registration for 2009-10 will begin 7-11 a.m., Aug. 4 for sixth grade, Aug 5 for seventh grade and Aug. 6 for eighth grade.

Registration will continue for all three grades through Aug. 21.

Registration is for students not active in Pahrump schools on June 4.

Bring birth certificate, immunization records including Hepatitis A and B, seventh grade requires Tdap, Social Security card and proof of residency. Parent or guardian bring their ID (only parent or guardian can register a child) and transcripts or report cards from previous school.

G.R.E.A.T. Summer Program

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and NyE Communities Coalition will pre-register the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) noon to 4 p.m., July 4 in Honeysuckle Park.

The program runs from 8 a.m. to noon each day, July 5, 6 and 10 in the park.

There is no fee for youth participation.

GREAT facilitates positive relationships between law enforcement, families and the community while encouraging youth to prevent violence, manage anger, resist peer pressure and resist gang involvement.

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis will hold a yard sale 7 a.m. to noon, June 27 at 3881 Terry Dr., off of Simpkins Road.

The proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

Several scholarships are awarded each year to local high school graduates.

Chamber for June

The following events are being sponsored by the Pahrump Chamber of Commerce for June:

* June 24 -- After Hours Networking Mixer, 5:30 p.m., Pahrump Valley Times. Co-hosts are Dragon Cloud Dojo and Smith's Food and Drug.

The cost is $5 for members and $15 for non-members.

* July 3 -- Community Family Picnic, 4 p.m., Petrack Park.

This is the pre-celebration for the annual fireworks show. Games, food and beverages will be available.

Bring chairs or a blanket and a picnic for the fireworks show at 9 p.m.

Volunteers for the games are needed. Call the chamber.

* July 4 -- "We the People" Jubilee, 10 a.m. until the fireworks at the Pahrump Nugget.

Games and vendors, live entertainment and a musical play "We the People," presented by the Shadow Mountain Community Players. The play will be staged at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

* July 9 -- July business meeting, 11:45 a.m., Great Basin College-Basin Campus.

Bill Verbeck of GBC and Diane Lake of JobConnect will present their partnership and the benefit to Pahrump and Nye County.

The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

The Pahrump Chamber of Commerce will host the "We the People" Jubilee starting at 10 a.m. July 4 at the Pahrump Nugget.

Model Railroad meeting

The Pahrump Model Railroad group will meet at 9 a.m. June 27 at the United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

All train enthusiasts are welcome, as are all gauges.

Independence Day parade

The VFW, Post 10054 will sponsor a parade and pancake breakfast to celebrate Independence Day.

The breakfast will be 6:30-8:30 a.m. July 4 and the cost is $2.

There will be a parade in the Calvada Eye beginning at 9 a.m.

Hafen Elementary registration

Hafen Elementary School will hold registration for new students 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 3.

Bring birth certificates, up-to-date shot records, address verification (utility bill, mortgage or rent receipt), parent or guardian photo ID and custody papers if applicable.

School begins Aug. 24 for early childhood and grades one through five.

Kindergartners will be assessed Aug. 24-26.

New student orientation will be at 6 p.m., Aug. 19 and an open house will be at 6 p.m., Sept. 2.

Democrats meet

The Nye County Democratic Party will meet at 6:30 p.m., June 29 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

PVHS dress code

Administration will have discretion to determine appropriate school attire.

* Necklines must cover cleavage;

* Tops must have sleeves;

* No clothing with controversial pictures, advertisements which might upset the education setting, including: sexually suggestive attire, that which contains lewd or profane slogans, hate language, ethnic slurs, references to alcohol, tobacco, drugs controlled substances, illegal activities, photos of weapons including but not limited to guns, knives, brass knuckles or grenades;

* No gang apparel;

* Hemlines for skirts, dresses or skorts to within two inches of the top of the knee or longer;

* No torn clothes with holes. Patches or repairs to clothing must be on the outside of the hole;

* No spandex or spandex-like clothing;

* No bandanas, bandana-like head wear, no do-rags to be worn or displayed;

* No hats on campus during the school day;

* Hoods may be worn outside during inclement weather but not inside the buildings;

* No sunglasses in the buildings;

* Pants/shorts/skirts are to be worn on hips or above;

* No visible underwear;

* Footwear: PE requires tennis shoes;

* The site administrator shall retain the authority to grant exceptions for special occasions or conditions;

* The principal, in connection with the sponsor, coach or other person in charge of extra-curricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity and may impose higher standards.

The Center has moved to a new location at 621 S. Blagg Road, behind No to Abuse.

Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning June 1.

June 26 -- NEIS Explore and Learn playgroup, 11 a.m.

Mondays -- Prenatal parenting class, 1-3 p.m.

Tuesdays -- Nurturing Parent class, 1-3 p.m., Spanish.

Wednesdays -- Nurturing Parent class, 1-3 p.m., English.

Thursdays -- Mommy and me play group, 1 p.m.

The resource lending library is open 8-4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Debut concert

Freedom of Praise Ministries will present the Pahrump Valley Gospel Choir in a debut concert at 6 p.m. June, 26 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The choir is under the direction of minister, George Ferguson.

Eagle Scout blood drive

Dustin Ward's Eagle Scout project is a blood drive to be held 8 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., June 27 at the LDS cultural hall, 921 E. Wilson Road.

Each donor will receive free tickets to the Area 51 baseball game at Cashman Field and a free pen to commemorate donating.

Women's self-defense class

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes will sponsor a two-day self-defense class for women 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 27 and 28 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The classes are free to women wanting to learn how to protect themselves.
