Jamie Lewis named responder of the year
By GINA B. GOOD
There's at least one person in Pahrump who doesn't complain about her commute into Las Vegas. During some work shifts, Emergency Medical Service flight nurse Jamie Lewis makes multiple trips from Pahrump to Las Vegas aboard Mercy Air's helicopter, giving life saving care to critical patients. Lewis relocated from the Reno area about 16 years ago, dedicating herself to serving the residents of Pahrump. She recently was awarded EMS responder of the year for 2009. Her compassion is one reason she stands out among her peers, according to proud husband, Scott, the fire chief for the town, who said his wife won the award after a selection and nomination process initiated by her peers. Lewis has been a nurse for 18 years, beginning her flight nursing career with Valley Hospital's Flight for Life before making her transition to Mercy Air about six years ago. "She is always striving to gain more knowledge and understanding of medicine by continuing her studies, taking classes and earning advanced certifications," said Scott. He also explained she has certifications above and beyond those required to maintain her EMS-RN license as well as those certifications required by Mercy Air Services. "At home, she is always reviewing various cases and the care involved, as well as reviewing resource materials to gain more knowledge and a further understanding of emergency and intensive care medicine," he said. "Jamie takes such a keen interest in all of her patients and she is so into her craft that she goes above and beyond the call of duty on each and every call. Her commitment to EMS and providing exceptional service is amazing. She also volunteers with Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Services and we utilize her skills on serious calls because of her expertise." Apparently, Lewis' peers agree with her husband's glowing account, as she was awarded the prestigious award during a ceremony in Las Vegas. Lewis has six children and her oldest daughter, Jessica, is also pursuing a nursing career. "It's not unusual to see Jamie and Jessica with their heads together, studying," said Scott. Jessica graduated at the top of her class for certified nursing and completed her EMT basic training with the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Services, where she volunteers as she works toward earning her Firefighter I certification. |
