CLUB MVC SERIES ENDS TONIGHT Bahler earns WSOP seatPVT
James Bahler became the fourth Pahrump Valley resident to earn a seat in the 2009 World Series of Poker, when he won a Club MVC final table Friday night, at the Mountain View Casino. Bahler came from behind to defeat Jim Bloomstine for the seat in Event 39 -- a $1,500 buy-in Texas hold'em no-limit tournament -- to be played Saturday at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Also at the final table Friday were Mike Bartley, John Williams, Andy Gueits, Frank Polansky, John Burns, Charlie Rehl, Andy Franzen and Larry Weese. Bartley and Steve Reiser, winners of the first two open qualifiers, played in events 24 and 28, respectively, last week but did not cash. Bartley and Rieser, as well as Bahler, won their seats -- worth $1,500 each -- in open qualifiers contested on the computerized tables at Club MVC, in the Mountain View Casino. Another local qualifier, Honey McDonald, did not cash in the WSOP Women's Championship tournament. * 10 players will go after the final WSOP seat at 7 p.m. today at Club MVC. They are Ray Hazelwood, Carl Torelli, Frank Polansky, Andy Guetis, Charley Rehl, Butch Dole, Don McDermott, Mike Fortin, Jim Gianino and Art Page. The winner goes to Event 51, a $1,500 buy-in no-limit tournament June 27. NOTES -- Phil Ivey won his second World Series of Poker event last weekend, earning $220,538 for his victory in the $2,500 buy-in Omaha-7-card stud tournament ... Ivey previously won the deuce-to-seven low-ball title and $96,367 ... Brock Parker has two wins as well; he earned $223,697 for his win in the six-handed limit hold'em event and $327,745 for his success in the no-limit six-handed tourney ... The biggest payday to date is $1,891,012, won by Vitaly Lunkin in the $40,000 buy-in 40th anniversary tournament; the prize pool for that one was $7,718,000 ... Through Wednesday, a total of $65,891,043 was paid into the prize pool ... On June 26, it's the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tourney, the WSOP's All-Star event ... Thus far, Jeff Von Alst, the poker room manager at the Nugget, is the lone local player to cash at the WSOP, earning $4,088 in the Casino Employees event ... Times Sports Editor Don McDermott will play in the WSOP Media Charity Poker tournament at the Rio ... The tournament is using the Dream Team format this year ... Harrah's is donating money to the Nevada Cancer Institute in the name of the winners ... Both individual and team champions will be determined in the Texas hold'em no-limit event that starts at 1 p.m. July 9. ... McDermott will be with the Nuuz Hounds, with KNUU radio hosts Andy Vierra and Kahala Carter his teammates ... All players will receive team jerseys, with their names across the back. ... The Dream Team tournament itself will be held July 12-13 at the Rio. |
