James Wesley Dixon Sr.

James "Jim" Wesley Dixon Sr., 81, died June 12, 2009, in his Pahrump home after a long struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Jim was born May 25, 1928, in Mancos, Colo., to Fred and Adeline (Bell) Dixon. He was the second oldest of eight children.

His parents, two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.

Jim spent his youth with his family in Mancos. When he was 14, Jim moved to Denver, Colo., and worked for Gates Rubber Company making tires and fan belts.

In 1947, he married Emily Rita Bergeron, and in 1948, the couple had a son, James Wesley Dixon Jr.

They divorced in 1955 and Jim later married Billie Winch.

He retired from Gates Rubber Company in 1971 and started his own construction business in Denver.

Jim's love for travel took him all over Colorado, Wyoming, East Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. He was a skilled craftsman and entrepreneur and operated concrete, construction and ranching businesses. He also owned several shoe stores in New Mexico.

After having been diagnosed with asthma in the late 1980s, Jim moved from Alamagordo, N.M., to Stafford, Ariz., to be at a lower elevation. He built his own home in Stafford and participated in a bowling league, a musical group and other community activities.

He had heart bypass surgery in the 1990s and in 1998, he moved to Pahrump to be near his brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Dixon.

Jim enjoyed playing the mandolin, guitar and violin. He loved gardening and took great pride in growing vegetables and creating a cactus landscape in his yard. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting for arrowheads, rock collecting and using his lapidary skills to make jewelry.

Jim is survived by his son, Jim Dixon of Fort Collins, Colo.; brothers Fred, John and Kim; sister Carol; sisters-in-law Arlene, Mary and Betty; brothers-in-law Gerald Williams and Charlie Kroeger; daughter-in-law Kathy; grandchildren Jesse and Ian; stepson Daryl Winch and many nieces and nephews.

Family members will gather at 4 p.m., June 28 at 3261 Rand Lane to remember Jim and celebrate his life. Friends and neighbors are invited to stop by.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the COPD Foundation or the American Indian Relief Council in Jim's name. (06/12/2009
