WITH RESPECT Flag Day in Pahrump
By GINA B. GOOD
During the flag ceremony at the Pahrump Elks Lodge on Sunday, June 14, Jack Hannigan said to those in attendance that the stars and stripes tells the story of America. Displaying the flag reminds and honors those individuals who served and sacrificed for the nation's freedom. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance," he said. Hannigian continued, "Who can forget the New York City fireman raising our flag on the site where 343 of them were murdered on September 11, 2001?" The Elks also acknowledged the 234th birthday of the U.S. Army with a red, white and blue sheet cake. Other events in Pahrump included a celebration hosted by the Nye County Republican Central Committee in theSaddle West Hotel and Casino in their front parking lot. Scotty Winegar's Dance N' Step Follies, decked out in red, white and blue spangled costumes, entertained with sychronized tapping, and the Boltons, a brother and sister act, took to the stage with their own unique brand of flag-waving tunes. "Thanks to our sponsors for helping so much with this event," said Linda DeMeo, one of the organizers. "CCA donated $500, Saddle West cordoned off their parking lot for us and it's because of them we have the Boltons," she said. "Mike Reeder donated the stage. He brought it over and set it up for us." When night descended, candles were lit and people lined up along Highway 160 in front of the Saddle West, to honor men and women serving in the Armed Forces as well as veterans of past conflicts. Passing vehicles honked as participants in the vigil waved American flags. Saddle West donated items for a raffle and at the end of the night's activities announced that $629.77 had been raised for the Disabled American Veterans. "This money is going to vets in Pahrump," said the announcer over the microphone. "This money is from the hearts of Americans in Pahrump." |
