Pahrump Valley's Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken baseball teams will play in regional tournaments in July.

Only the Minor Division (7-8s) will not compete at the state level, according to a league source.

The Major Division (9-12s) will compete in the Silver State North Valley Regional Park State Championship tournament July 3-8. The winner advances to the regionals, to be played in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Junior Division (15 and under) will play in a state qualifier July 13-15 at Mark Twain Field in Dayton. The state tournament is July 16 at West League Field in Reno. The regionals are at Rohnert Park in Santa Rosa, Calif., in August.

In games played Wednesday, the Red Sox defeated the Pirates 17-6 in the Minor Division playoffs, while in a Junior playoff contest, the Yankees eliminated the D'backs 10-6.

In the Major Division, the White Sox and the Giants collided in a playoff game Thursday, thanks to a 7-1 win against the Yankees on Tuesday.

Robert Barry struck out 11 and pitched a complete game as the White Sox defeated the Yankees.

* In American Legion baseball Wednesday, Pahrump Valley swept a doubleheader from Las Vegas Western 11-2 and 6-5, at Eldorado. The sweep moves Pahrump Valley to 2-2 in the Silver Division, while Western dropped to 1-5.

Pahrump Valley goes to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Saturday, with the doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. at Koerwitz Stadium.

The Brandon Bietar-managed PV team is at home Wednesday for a twin bill against Henderson Coronado (5 p.m.)

* One of the best players on the Nevada Class 4-A state championship Las Vegas Bishop Gorman team has been drafted.

Chosen in the fifth round by the Tampa Bay Rays was Jeff Malm. For the 40-4 Gaels this past season, Malm hit .564 with 17 home runs and 59 runs batted in; the left-handed pitcher was 11-1 with an earned run average of 1.50.

Durango's Danny Reynolds, 4-6 with a 2.79 ERA for the TrailBlazers last season, was a sixth-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels and College of Southern Nevada pitcher Egan Smith went to the Toronto Blue Jays. Smith was 4-6 with an ERA of 3.32 for CSN this past season.

Elsewhere in summer-time sports:

* Nevada boys won the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays in the Great Southwest Classic at Albuquerque, N.M., last weekend. The winning times were 0:40.83 and 1:25.73, respectively. John Cartier of Faith Lutheran was on the 4x100 team, while Marcus Sullivan, from Las Vegas, was a key to the 4x200 quartet's success.

Avione Allgood of Legacy placed third in the shot put (39-10), fifth in the discus (130-08), fourth in the javelin (139-2) and fourth in the hammer throw (114-0) at the meet.

* The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association meets Tuesday and Wednesday at Aces Park in Reno, with realignment the major discussion/decision issue. Also on the agenda is the status of girls soccer at Pahrump Valley and Faith Lutheran high schools. The question will be, will the Trojans and Crusaders both play in the fall (with the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League) or with the Clark County School District-based 4-A league in the winter?
