POKER ROUNDUP Tourney benefits Senior Center

The Pahrump Valley Senior Center will receive more than $3,300 from a charity poker tournament played Wednesday night in the convention center at the Nugget Hotel and Casino. A total of 74 players paid $50 each to compete in the Texas hold'em no-limit tournament. Skip Woodard won the event, with Ngoc Lam second, Jeremy Jensen third, Gary Hollis fourth and John Williams fifth. It was the second such charity event staged in the Nugget; the other was in April and was for the DARE program. In other poker news: * Pahrump residents Mike Bartley started Thursday and Steve Reiser will be at his seat Saturday in 2009 World Series of Poker tournaments, at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Bartley and Rieser both won their seats -- worth $1,500 each -- in qualifying tournaments played on the computerized tables at Club MVC, in the Mountain View Casino. Honey McDonald, who won a qualifier final at Club MVC, did not cash in the WSOP Women's Championship tournament, completed Tuesday. Lisa Hamilton, from Las Vegas, won, earning $195,390 out of a prize pool of $964,600, paid by 1,060 entries. Lori Bender of Houston, Texas, received $120,575 for her second-place finish, with Mari Lou Morelli of Long Beach, Calif., pocketing $76,132 for placing third. Bartley started play Thursday in Event 24, a $1,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament. Reiser is in Event 28, another $1,500 NLHE event. The remaining qualifiers: * The field is complete for the third open qualifier, to be played today starting at 7 p.m. The 10 finalists include Bartley, along with John Williams, Andy Gueits, Frank Polansky, John Burns, Charlie Rehl, Andy Franzen, James Bahler, Jim Bloomstine and Larry Weese. The winner advances to a $1,500 NLHE tournament June 20. * Six players have qualified for the final WSOP preliminary; they are Ray Hazelwood, Carl Torelli, Frank Polansky, Andy Guetis, Charley Rehl and Butch Dole. The remaining qualifiers are Sunday (2 p.m.) and Wednesday (4 p.m.) The final table is June 19 (7 p.m.), with the winner going to the WSOP June 27. The entry fee for Club MVC events is $70, with players starting with $5,000 in chips. AT THE WORLD SERIES -- Daniel Negreanu -- Kid Poker -- has already cashed in four WSOP tournaments ... He was 10th in Event 6 (7-card stud), earning $36,266 ... 43rd in Event 10 (pot-limit hold'em), worth $5,074; second in Event 14 (limit hold'em, 6-handed, $138,280) and fourth in Event 18 (Omaha hi-lo, 8 or better, $130,401) ... Phil Ivey got his sixth bracelet after his victory in Event 8 (2-7 draw lowball); the payoff was $96,367 ... Jeffrey Lisandro won his second WSOP bracelet, winning Event 16 (7-card stud) and earning $124,975 ... More than $43 million has been paid into the prize pool, in tournaments played through Wednesday ... The WSOP Media/Charity tournament is July 9 at the Rio; all credentdialed media will be eligible to compete in the no-limit hold'em event, starting at 1 p.m. ... The Dream Team format will used for this event, with three-person teams formed ... How the top two finish will determine a team score and the final standings. |
