Residents can be subject to steep fines and jail time for not abiding by Pahrump Town Ordinance (PTO) No. 43.

During public comment at Tuesday's town board meeting, a resident named Gary (whose last name could not be confirmed by the meeting sign-up sheet) asked the board why they would consent to making the townspeople criminals for petty violations.

The ordinance states that persons violating any of the provisions in the 21 page ordinance "shall be guilty of a misdemeanor."

A fine of not less than $200 or more than $1,000 will be levied upon conviction of a first offense. A sentence of not more than six months in the Pahrump jail, is possible along with the fine.

If convicted of a second offense, the fine jumps to at least $500 but no more than $1,000 and could be coupled with up to six months in jail.

A third violation ups the fine to a minimum of $1,000 and a minimum of ten days, not to exceed six months in the Pahrump jail.

Every day that a violation occurs or is allowed to exist or continue constitutes a separate offense.
