Pahrump Valley's American Legion baseball team travels to Eldorado High School in Las Vegas today for a Silver Division doubleheader against Western. The first game starts at 5 p.m.

Pahrump Valley opened its third Silver Division campaign Sunday at Honeysuckle Park, bowing 16-8 and 7-6 to Sierra Vista.

With the sweep, Sierra Vista squared its 2009 record at 4-4.

Eddie Martinez, Mike Gonzalez and Danny Cazier had big hits for Pahrump Valley, but Sierra Vista rarely relented offensively, scoring 23 runs in 14 innings.

Tyler Lepley had the first hit of the season for Pahrump, managed by Brandon Bietar.

The Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball playoffs are going on in full force at Honeysuckle Park.

Today, in a Minor Division game, the Red Sox and Pirates will meet in a winners' bracket final at 6 p.m. A Pirates win will force a showdown contest at 6 p.m. Friday.

The Pirates defeated the Orioles 11-10, while the Red Sox stopped the Pirates 14-4 in earlier games.

In the Major Division, the Giants will play the White Sox-Yankes winner at 6 p.m. Thursday, to start the championship round. The Giants defeated the Yankees 11-6 and White Sox 12-2 in first-round games. The White Sox and Yankees clashed Tuesday in a losers' bracket finale.

An if necessary game is slated at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

In the Junior Division, the Yankees and Diamondbacks clash at 6 p.m. today, with the title at stake. If the D'backs win, a showdown contest is slated at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The D'backs defeated the Pirates 14-4 and the Nationals 7-6 to advance to the finals through the losers' bracket. The Yankees beat the Pirates 16-4 and the Nationals 9-2 to move into the finals undefeated.

The Pahrump Valley Baseball Association will hold car washes, bake sales and yard sales to help defray traveling expenses to Northern Nevada Babe Ruth tournaments. Watch for signs by Sunflower Fashions to help out the players.

Any one interested in sponsoring a team, call Shelly at 751-9595. Tournament play begins around July 9, with trips to the greater Reno area scheduled.
