Hazmat crew finds no danger at school
By GINA B. GOOD
First responders answered a call to Rosemary Clarke Middle School Wednesday at about 3 p.m. when a suspicious and possibly hazardous package was left after school. After three hours of intense investigation by bomb-sniffing K-9 deputies and hazmat technicians, it was determined the package, which was actually an old typewriter case, contained brown liquid in bottles that may have been a student's science project. Teachers were still at work and the entire campus was evacuated while the county Emergency Service Hazmat team, suited up and began investigating the scene. The K-9 deputies did not alert on the package; eliminating the possibility that explosive materials were involved. Tests were run on small samples and the liquid proved to be harmless. In March, the Las Vegas Hazardous Device Response Team was called to Pahrump for two incidents within the same week. The first incident at the dump proved to be an ice chest full of fireworks. A few days later, a homeowner found what looked like a pipe bomb in his backyard in south Pahrump. Drug paraphernalia was found stuffed into the pipe on that call. McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas, as well as other airports across the country, are currently on heightened orange alert status. Some passengers have reported an increase in random pat-downs and luggage searches. |
