REALIGNMENT ON AGENDA NIAA to meet June 16-17
By DON McDERMOTT
With realignment in the 2010-2011 school year as one of the major items on its agenda, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association will meet at Aces Stadium in Reno June 16-17. The June meeting, which traditionally have been the busiest of the school year, will be no different. Activity calendars for 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 will be discussed, along with realignment proposals, which could go into effect in the '10-11 school year. Also on the agenda will be a discussion on Class 3-A girls soccer and whether Pahrump Valley and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran will be included in Southern 3-A for another season. Pahrump Valley is in the Sunset Region Southwest 4-A division, while Faith Lutheran is moving into the Northwest 4-A next school year. The Clark County School District 4-A soccer season is also to be discussed. Other items on the agenda: * Jackpot moving into the Idaho association for football only; * The Orleans Arena, site for the 2009 state basektball tournament finals, could be offered a three-year deal for the sport. * Primm Valley Resort could be put under contract for the state wrestling tournament. * Winter gate receipts will be announced. The meeting each day will start at 9 a.m. ---- Pahrump Valley will open its American Legion baseball season at home Sunday, playing a doubleheader against Las Vegas Sierra Vista, starting at 5 p.m. at Honeysuckle Park. The Trojans play at Las Vegas Eldorado Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m. ---- Dominique Maloy, a 15-time state champion in Nevada Class 3-A track, has qualified for the NCAA Division I Nationals, as a member of the Arizona State University team. In the regionals contested last weekend at Eugene, Ore., Maloy qualified in the 100-meter dash in 0:11.42 seconds and the 200 in 0:23.52, as well as the 4x100 relay (0:44.36) and 4x400 (3:25.26). Kayla Sanchez, a former Carson (Nevada) prep star, is a freshman on the 4x100 team, which won that event. Teammate Chandra Williams won the 100 in 0:11.16 and the 200 in 0:23.03, with Sara Stevens winning the shot put at 17.0 meters. ---- Christine Gamble, a freshman on the William Penn (Iowa) fast-pitch softball team, appeared in 19 games, seven as a starter. The former Pahrump Valley high school star, had four hits, including two doubles, in 26 plate appearances, all as a designated hitter or pinchhitter. William Penn won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular-season title with a 26-4 record. The team was 40-16 in all games. Gamble was the only Nevadan on the team, which included three players from California. ---- There will be a longer, more complete story on the Pahrump Valley High School fall sports schedule. Right now, the highlight is two home appearances for the Trojans' cross country team. PVHS will host Las Vegas Desert Oasis, Durango and Adelson Prep Sept. 1. On Sept. 15, Clark and Western will take on the Trojans in Pahrump. The course will likely be laid out on the Lakeview Executive golf course, with both meets beginning at 5:30 p.m. |
