Solid scores win in Goins golf
By DON McDERMOTT
The Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association, for more than 25 years one of the prime developers of young players, experienced a couple of banner days at the Lakeview Executive course. With temperatures soaring as high as 108 degrees both Monday and Tuesday, 50 boys and girls ages 7 to 18 competed in Gene Goins Memorial, the season-ending PVJGA tournament of the season. The tournament, co-directed by Larry and Elaine Goins of the PVJGA, featured many outstanding scores in all age groups. The 7-8 and 9-11 age groups played nine holes each day, while the 12-14s and 15-18s went 18 holes both days on the par 59 (60 girls), 3,600-yard course. The winners: * Jackie Stobbe, girls 7-8, 49-43--92; * Tyler Floyd, boys 7-8, 44-46--90; * Courtney Jersic, girls 9-11, 53-49--102; * Derek Moore, boys 9-11, 36-39--75; * Tori Peers, girls 12-14, 77-81, 158; * Samuel Tietjen, boys 12-14, 64-65--129; * Ashley Keller, girls 15-18, 69-68--137; * Shane Lindemann, boys 15-18, 61-61--122. Floyd is the son of Julie Floyd, the girls' golf coach at Pahrump Valley High School; Moore has been one of the leading younger players in golf for the last three years; Tietjen has been working hard on improving his game; Keller won the $5,000 PVJGA scholarship and will enroll in the PGA Management course at UNLV in the fall; Lindemann, on the PVHS boys' golf team, has played in three consecutive state tournaments. Playing conditions were not the best, not only because of the weather. Water had to be brought in -- at a cost of about $1,000 -- each day. The 2009-2010 season is to start in September and continue each Monday until June, when the annual mandatory clinic is held at Mountain Falls.
