Starting today and tentatively scheduled to be a twice-a-month feature is a column on poker, currently played at three Pahrump casinos.

News on all of the poker disciplines will be included in this piece. Today's focus will be on the schedules of tournaments at the Mountain View Casino, the Nugget Hotel and Casino and Terrible's Town.

The Mountain View casino has two computerized tables; it has events scheduled every day except Wednesdays. The Nugget has tournaments almost every day; the second Saturday of each month is dedicated to a freeroll tournament. Terrible's has a relatively limited schedule, with a ladies' event on Wednesdays and no-limit hold'em tournaments Tuesdays and Thursdays.

NOTES -- Sports Editor Don McDermott played in the Dream Team Poker Media event at the World Series of Poker July 9; he was eliminated in a heads-up showdown by Dennis Phillips, who was fourth in the 2008 World Series of Poker championship event in November. ... The 2009 WSOP finals are Nov. 7-10 at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino ... Among the nine finalists is Phil Ivey, one of pro poker's top competitors.
