Free swim nights in July There will be free swim evenings at the community pool on the following dates. Teen Nights, 6-8 p.m. July 31 -- sponsored by Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Lil Miss, Lil Master contest The Lil Miss, Lil Master contest will be Aug. 1 at the town annex, 270 N. Highway 160. Competition for Lil Miss will be 10-11 a.m. and Lil Master will be 11-11:45 a.m. Contestants will be judged on visual presentation, parade and wave and personality. Crafters wanted Order of the eastern Star will hold an indoor fund raising craft fair Sept. 12. Vendors are wanted for the event. Safety in the sun Family to Family recommends the following tips for playing it safe in the sun: * Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. * Apply sunscreen before going outside and reapply often, especially after swimming, perspiring and toweling off. * Wear a wide-brimmed hat and use UV protective sunglasses. * Stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids and offer fluids to children. * Remember, a child's core body temperature increases three to five times faster than an adult. Farmers' market The weekly farmers' market will continue 7 a.m. to noon, Saturdays through the summer at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Food drive Nye County Emergency Services will hold a food drive to keep the food banks full from 8 a.m. to noon, July 31 in the parking lot of Smith's Food & Drug, 601 S. Highway 160. Items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, noodles, rice, canned goods such as meat, fruits, soups and vegetables. Volunteers will also hand out information on disaster preparedness. Giant rummage sale Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold its giant summer rummage sale 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 7 and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372. There will be lots of furniture, household items, books, clothing, linens, toys and crafts. Lunch and pastries will be available. Clothes closet seeks donations The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is seeking donations of gently worn clothing in all sizes for a public event beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 8. Benefit for Valerie Jones There will be a benefit to help with medical expenses for leukemia patient, Valerie Jones, at 3 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall, 340 E. Mesquite Ave. Jones needs surgery and has no medical insurance. Donations of items to be auctioned and raffled and cash donations are appreciated. There will be live music as well as the auctions.
