Weekebnd Update

There are numerous events on tap this weekend in spite of the soaring temperatures.

* Two new restaurants are open in Pahrump. Tommasino's Fine Italian Dining, across from Saitta-Trudeau, offers live music during the lunch hour, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and again during the evening, 6 to 10 p.m. There is also a Wednesday jam session in the evenings. The menu and an entertainment schedule can be seen on the Web site, www.tomsaitta.com

The second restaurant is Jo's Pizza located at the Maverick. Jo as been making pizza, sandwiches and salads here for years. She took a sabbatical for several years and has recently been seen at the aid of other pizza places in town. July 1, Jo opened another pizza place of her own which takes the place of Walter's Cajun Barbecue. She still offers the famous menu from her last restaurant along with carryout and delivery. The number is 751-9997.

* The Pahrump Singles Friendship Club will meet at noon in Symphony's Restaurant at the winery to celebrate birthdays. For reservations, call 727-0253.

Saturday, at 5 p.m., the club meets again for the monthly potluck at the UNR extension office on Calvada Boulevard.

* Valley Cruisers Car Club will host a Family Day of swimming noon to 6 p.m. at the community pool.

* The art exhibit, "Earth, Fire, Water," sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council at the courthouse gallery, will close today at 4:30. Read all about is and see what you're missing in the article above.

* The Pahrump Community Library is hosting another PAC art exhibit, by Stenmark Toy. Her display of portraits will be shown for another week. The exhibit closes July 31.

* Movies are on tap for this weekend too. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is still playing at Saddle West but there are a few other choices.

* There's a free movie at the library tomorrow at 1 p.m. The movie is "Coraline," rated PG, and no children under 10 can attend without an adult.

* The weekend movies in the park will continue at dusk tomorrow as well. This weekend the movie is "Journey to the Center of the Earth." The gates open at 7:30 and the movie starts at dusk. Refreshments and food will be available. Take a blanket or chairs.

* Something new are movies on the patio at K-7 Lounge on Hafen Ranch Road. Starting tomorrow the movie will be a Nicholas Cage flick called "Knowing." Admission is $5 and the movie starts at 8 p.m.

* The Pahrump Equestrian Trail Ride Association is holding a trail ride through Stewart Valley on Saturday. The group will meet on the Stewart Valley Road off of Highway 372 at 7:30 a.m. The trail is medium difficulty and should last three or four hours. Take water, it's going to be hot.

* Valley Electric Association will hold the Fill the Bucket Truck event Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Walmart. Every year VEA sponsors this event to help provide school supplies for the less fortunate children in the valley. With the depressed economy, the need is greater this year than ever.

* Another nonprofit is raising funds this weekend. Saturday morning Pahrump Valley Roasters will host a free coffee tasting 7 to 11 a.m., and the Pahrump Senior Center will be there to wash your car. The car wash is a $5 donation. Pahrump Valley Roasters is on Oxbow Avenue across from Saitta- Trudeau in Suite 6.

* Down the street on Frontage Road, Nye Gold Seekers will hold a gold-panning class 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. The event will be in the parking lot of Gotta Getta Map in the Hollywood Plaza.

* There is a dance recital this weekend as well. The Artistic Centre will hold their recital with three shows, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. All the shows will be staged in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium.

* Wine is on tap for the Knights of Columbus wind tasting scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Our Lady of the Valley parish hall on Gamebird Road. This is a fundraiser for the nonprofit to help their funding to other local organizations including the PVHS band. The cost is $5 and Hank Maglia, the host, asks that everyone be prompt. He is knowledgeable about wines so the event will be a learning experience as well.
