Update on the tower

Usually the most vexing problem facing television viewers is finding the remote control, but now that the newly constructed communications tower is up and running, some viewers may need to find the proper channels to receive Las Vegas programming.

According to Matt Luis, manager of Pahrump's building and grounds department, viewers with older TVs can manually channel surf to find the new network TV channels, but owners of newer sets need to perform a channel scan.

"It's exactly the same as when you first bought your TV and plugged it in," Luis said. "The newer sets have a menu and you just have to select 'scan'.

"The tower has been putting out a signal for more than a week," he said. "There have been a few bugs to work out. We've been having trouble with interference, but the crew has been terrific about following through and people should be getting pretty decent reception now."

The tower is located behind the Valley Auto Mall, just north of the main post office. Reception will be augmented by orienting antennas toward the tower.
