Knights of Columbus wine tasting

The Knights of Columbus will bring back its popular wine tasting fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m., July 26 in the parish hall of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

Grand Knight C.W. Buhn said when the Knights held the first wine event in February of this year, it was so popular, and so many people have asked for a repeat performance, the organization is going to oblige.

"We were amazed at the enthusiasm," Buhn said. "We had a great turn out."

Since the wines are being donated by Johnson Brothers of Nevada, a wine distributor in Las Vegas, there isn't really any overhead, which keeps the ticket costs to attend the event very low.

Admission is only $5.

There will be a well-qualified presenter to lead the tasting. Hank Maglia is a member of Knights of Columbus. He also is a wine distributor and has achieved two very distinguished Master Sommelier titles from the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Maglia holds a MS (Master Sommelier) and a MW (Master of Wines) so he will be able to discuss the varietals, growing technology and winemaking techniques with attendees. Part of his day job is training servers and cellar masters in the art of wines.

He has just started choosing the wines for this event but has plans to offer a Malbec from Argentina, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile and a Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon from California.

Maglia said the wines tasted will be available for purchase by the bottle after the tasting and he's working with Smith's Food & Drug to offer the wines as well.

None of the wines will be over $10 if participants purchase them at the tasting. Both Buhn and Maglia said the Knights of Columbus aren't trying to "make a killing," the organization just wants to add to its funding ability for several local charities.

Special Olympics, No to Abuse, Nathan Adelson Hospice, Pahrump Valley High School Band and the local food banks are some recipients of past contributions by Knights of Columbus.

The event will be held in the Our Lady of the Valley parish hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road, and will start promptly at 1 p.m.

Last time the event was held, Maglia said, "People kept straggling in." He said this time he is asking attendees to be prompt.

Tickets are available in advance at the church or by calling 727-4044. Although it isn't mandatory, February's event sold out quickly and Maglia advises those wanting to attend make advance arrangements.
