Fundraisers

The Pahrump Valley Softball Association has scheduled fundraisers for the three girls teams that will travel to the California State Games in San Diego July 17.

All players are selling Party-Lite Candles from now through July 10. The teams receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale.

Stop by their practice sessions at Petrack Park to order the candles, or contact Cyndi at 513-7562 for the Party Lite or other sponsoringship information.

Also, contact Joe at 537-7754 or Shanda at 209-5284 for sales and information.

Hoop camps

* Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten-Star All-Star Basketball Camp, for boys and girls 10 to 19 years old.

For information, call 1-704-373-0873, or go to the Web site, www.ten-starcamp.com.

* Advantage Basketball camps are now accepting registrations for the 2009 summer camp at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho, Las Vegas. The camp is Aug. 17-21 and runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Check the Web site, www.advantagebasketball.com for information, or e-mail info@advantagebasketball.com.

Spirit coaches

The 2009 Nevada State Spirit Coaches Education and Training meeting will be held Aug. 19-20 in Las Vegas, at Bonanza High School.

Pre-registration is required for all classes and is due Aug. 1. Send pre-registration form to Coach Terrie McNutt, 525 Pioche St., Carson City, NV 89701.

Do not send money; all fees are due the day of the class. Consult the Web site, www.niaa.com, for information on the fees.

The classes are on partner-stunt progressions, spirit program management, motions jumps and tumbling and cheerleading. Mandatory classes are on the NIAA and NFHS Rules and Regulations and AACCA Safety certification.

* The NIAA/NADA First Annual Summit on Professional Development will be held Aug. 7-9 at Mesquite.

On Aug. 10, league meetings will be held, starting at 9:15 a.m.

For information, go to the Web site, www.niaa.com or call 1-775-453-1012.

Pop Warner

Registration is now open for the 2009 Pop Warner football season.

Players 5 to 7 years old and weighing 75 pounds or less play for one team; the second team is for youth 8 to 11 who weigh 105 pounds or less.

The age is as of July 31, 2009. The cost of registration is $180. Registration forms can be picked up, and completed, at Worden's Farmers Insurance Agency, 2210 E. Commercial Road (off Highway 160 at the Nevada State Bank).

Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Pahrump Pop Warner teams play in the Southern Nevada Conference. The Rush is in the Pee-Wee Division (ages 8 to 11) and will be coached by Robert Worden. The Sharks of the tiny-mite division (ages 5 to 7) will be coached by Damon Plant.

Teams are limited to 35 players, so early registration is encouraged. Practice will begin Aug. 3.

PV: key dates

Prospective Pahrump Valley High School student-athletes should remember these dates and be prepared for the 2009-2010 sports seasons.

* July 15: Physical examination and registration forms will be available at Pahrump Valley High School; summer hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

* Aug. 3: Early registration will be held from noon to 8 p.m. in the PVHS athletics director's office. Bring completed physical and registration forms. Physicals must be done by a doctor, not chiropractors.

Every student must have a new physical examination each year. The forms are available at the school and should be picked up before going to the doctor.

These forms will be available July 15.

* Aug. 10: Final registration will be held from noon to 6 p.m. in the AD's office. Student-athletes must be registered by this date to be eligible to participate.

Anyone having problems meeting this requirement should contact the AD's office (727-7908).

Aug. 13: This is the first official day for football practice.

Aug. 17: All remaining fall sports (girls volleyball, girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer) start preseason workouts.

Girls soccer will be a fall sport; the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association made that decision at its June 16-17 meeting in Reno.

Aug. 24: First day of school.

Fall sports

For prospective Pahrump Valley High school athletes, there are several important facts to remember.

* An appropriate physical examination / registration form must be on file in the athletics department office.

* Athletes must have health insurance coverage; any one not having coverage can purchase it through the school.

* All student-athletes must meet Nevada and Nye County School District academic eligibility requirements. Each prospect must have passed at least four classes in the second semester of the 2008-2009 school year and must have a grade point average of at least 2.0.
