Jan Jensen and Dennis Arey, who have been dancing as a brother-sister pair since they were kids, won the judge's choice during the Pahrump Dancing With the Stars competition at The Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall Saturday night.

Tim Hafen and Marylou Cota won the people's choice award.

A sold-out audience of 200 people attended the event. The ticket sales and raffle raised $4,610 for the American Cancer Society, according to Debbie Walsh, event coordinator.

Jensen, the owner of The Maverick Saloon and former owner of the StageStop, joined brother Dennis in dancing the jitterbug, one of the more lively numbers of the evening that illustrated their many years of dancing together with well coordinated moves.

The judges included former president of the Pahrump Senior Center Ken Van Heule, KNYE-FM owner Karen Jackson, Nye County Commissioner Gary Hollis, Ms. Senior Golden Years 2004 Mitzi Sears and reporter Mark Waite from the Pahrump Valley Times.

The judges weren't nearly as tough on the dancers in their critiques as the infamous Simon Howell of the national Dancing with the Stars competition. Dancers took the criticism all in good stride, knowing they were contributing to a good cause.

Hafen, who moved to Pahrump in 1951, owns Hafen Realty and developed Artesia and Cottonwoods subdivision. He teamed up with Cota, a member of the Nevada Silver Tappers since 2005. Hafen admitted the western freestyle was the only dance he knew.

Other dancers included Sharon Cahlan, a member of the Nevada Silver Tappers and Ms. Senior Golden Years 2006, who teamed up with Stewart Smith, a former Arthur Murray dance instructor, in dancing the fox trot.

Sheriff Tony DeMeo looked like a matador, dancing with Ione DeSantis-Wilk in a Paso Doble, designed to resemble a bull fight.

Donna Lamm, the owner of Donna's School of Dance, put on more of a classical faire, teaming up with Kevin Roberts, a teacher at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

B.J. Hetrick-Irwin, director of the Nevada Silver Tappers, waltzed on stage with a much younger Rick Minch.

Jeremy Jenson, Pahrump Nugget general manager, teamed up with Cindy McGrath, a member of the Nevada Silver Tappers, to dance the jive.

Nye County Manager Rick Osborne and Ethel Milner teamed up on a west coast swing.
