When Austin Runyon, 20, moved from Idaho to Pahrump in December 2007, he left behind a life of bittersweet memories. Now, he can be found leading worship on Sundays at his church or as department manager of dairy products for Walmart.

Runyon discovered at an early age that music was a powerful tool that can express the most painful or happiest of emotions.

Since he was very young, Runyon has been playing guitar and singing. He also plays the mandolin, the violin and the viola, and is learning to play harmonica.

"I wrote my first song when I was 12. I play anything I can get my hands on -- piano, strings, the drums," he said. "Music was the only thing that helped me to escape. It's helped me make it through some tough times."

Runyon's had many surgeries, sometimes with little hope of survival. Many of the songs he has written have been inspired by his faith in God and the strength to survive.

"When I was in the hospital and alone at night, I would write. I knew that God would hear me and bring me through," he said.

In fall 2008 Runyon decided to take his passion for music one step further by taking classes online offered by Berklee School of Music, pursuing a degree in the music business. Following the start of his classes in fall 2008, Austin created his own record label, Forever Red Records.

"I want a record label that isn't just in it for the money and ignores the band's or artist's individuality," Runyon said. "I want to create a positive influence and make lesser known bands known."

As part of Forever Red Records, Runyon also formed Forever Red Booking and Promotions. He has booked three concerts for this summer. One took place two weeks ago and included High Flight Society, Sleep for Sleepers and Two Days.

"I've played with Third Day and worked with Ever Stays Red and Skillet," Runyon said. "They're all Christian rock bands with their own unique sound."

The use of technology, such as Myspace, has been a great help for spreading the word about Forever Red Records and Forever Red Booking and Promotions.

By using Myspace, any user can access profiles for both Forever Red Records and Forever Red Booking and Promotions and receive all the information about upcoming shows or bands interested in getting involved with a record label.

"When I moved here, I noticed there was hardly any kind of a music scene," Runyon said. "I hope to help shape a positive influence for Pahrump's music scene through my music, the concerts and through my record label."
