BASEBALL Pahrump at Reno; in Ripken playoffsPVT
The 12-and-Under Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Division team from Pahrump plays Sun Valley at 5 p.m. Friday, in a tournament at North Valleys Regional Park in Reno. In another first-round matchup, it will be Churchill County Fallon vs. Silver State at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The tournament continues Friday, with the Pahrump-Sun Valley winner taking on Sparks Spanish Springs at 5 p.m. Other games are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m, 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. The tournament concludes Monday, with games at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. (if necessary). The Pahrump team is managed by Larry Morales, with Gene Ault and Carlos River Sr. the coaches. On the roster are Josh Fraley, Jason Fraley, Devin Riley, Dylan Ault, Jonathan Carrow, Shelton Cajudoy, Ty Olsen, Daniel Classen, Jake Bottita, Josh Mortensen, Alex Morales, Chris Beauparlant, Robert Barry, Eduardo Gonzalez and Carlos Rivera Jr. * Pahrump Valley's American Legion baseball team fell to 4-6 Saturday, with 17-5 and 9-6 Silver Division losses to homestanding Las Vegas Eldorado. Pahrump played at home Tuesday against Desert Oasis; Thursday, the Trojans travel to Centennial for another Silver twin bill, starting at 4:30 p.m. * The North defeated the South 7-4 in the 12th annual Kelley Baseball Showcase Saturday, at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno. A five-run outburst in the sixth inning lifted the North to victory in an all-star game featuring some of Nevada's best high school players. The North had 11 hits and got some solid pitching from Truckee's MacLane Brady, Reno McQueen's Chris Stocker and Churchill County Fallon's Teryn Smith. In the crowd were college and professional scouts, who got another opportunity to check out some of Nevada's top prep players. The Southern Nevada team, coached by Silverado's Brian Whitaker, included Sunset Region Class 4-A players Buddy Borden (P, Arbor View), Christian Centrella (SS, Palo Verde), Marquise Hall (SS, Cheyenne) and Zack Hartman (P/IF, Arbor View). * In a month full of honors and headlines, Las Vegas High baseball standout Bryce Harper made another by being named national High School Player of the Year by Baseball America. Harper, a sophomore, became the first non-senior to receive the award and is the 18th annual winner. Harper graced the cover of Sports Illustrated this month, then made national news by announcing he had enrolled at the College of Southern Nevada and would skip his final two years of high school. Harper was nearly unstoppable this spring, batting .626 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs in 39 games. He scored 76 runs, had 39 walks and stole 36 bases. Forty-five of his 72 hits were for extra bases.
