Marcellino Mendez rushed into Shapland's home and managed to get him out and to safety as the flames raced through the bamboo and destroyed two buildings and his van.

Sheriff deputies recognized Larry Fielding at the scene of the fire and arrested him on outstanding warrants. He is in custody in the Pahrump jail on $1,000 cash bail. Rusty Shapland said he and Fielding must have started the fire from sparks while using a power grinder to cut metal.

Rusty Shapland, who lost his home and possessions in a raging fire over the weekend, was overcome with emotion and could barely speak as he sat in his wheelchair in the unrelenting 100-plus degree heat. He was several blocks away from where his home still burned at the corner of Buol and Wilson roads.

There was no shade in the vacant field. He knew he'd lost his home, but still he sat near the road waiting for details and watching various fire apparatus drive to and from the blaze.

"I bought the place in 1958 and bought a brand new home on it in 1970," said Shapland. "I don't know where to go or where I'll stay."

His nurse Karen was nearby, saying she was calling a local casino to get him a room. Shapland, who said his wife passed away in 2000, also had several friends nearby, ready to drive him away. The Pahrump Nugget gave Shapland a free room for the night.

He said he knows how the fire started.

"My friend Larry [Fielding] and I were cutting a piece of metal to use for the stove and a spark got into the bamboo," said Shapland, who was inside the house when his neighbor Marcelino Martinez rushed in to get him out.

"I want to thank Marcellino very much. Thanks for trying to drag me out of the house. I guess I put up a good fight."

Martinez said he spoke to Fielding's brother, who was on the scene, and confirmed his brother was cutting metal with a grinder.
