New laws go into effect across Nevada
CARSON CITY -- Here are highlights of new laws taking effect July 1 in Nevada:

Termination clause still debated over public defender contract
Nye County Commissioners and attorneys for the county public defender firm. Gibson and Kuehn, agreed to a five-year contract for $550,000 per year back in February, but there are still disagreements over the termination clause in the contract.

California Lottery
No one matched all five numbers and the mega number in Saturday's drawing of the California Super Lotto. The next jackpot will be at least $9 million.

GBC tuition will jump 10 percent
Students attending Great Basin College in Pahrump will have to dole out 5 percent more for tuition next fall, the Nevada Board of Regents already decided earlier, during the school year.

Valley Electric Association customers will receive a questionnaire next week, asking if they would be interested in leasing a solar water heater under a new program.

The following information was provided by the Nye County Sheriff's Office. All crimes are alleged and all defendants are presumed innocent:

Shapland loses everything in fire
Rusty Shapland, who lost his home and possessions in a raging fire over the weekend, was overcome with emotion and could barely speak as he sat in his wheelchair in the unrelenting 100-plus degree heat. He was several blocks away from where his home still burned at the corner of Buol and Wilson roads.
