Needles, Lincoln top 2-A
The boys from Needles, Calif., and the girls from Lincoln County lead the Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School Class 2-A basketball ratings in week three. The Mustangs are 20-5 and lead Dayton-area team Silver Stage, 17-3, in the the ratings that will be published each Friday through Feb. 13 and will conclude Feb. 18. Lincoln County's Lady Lynx is 17-1 and right behind them is Needles, 18-2. In Class 4-A, the Las Vegas Cheyenne boys, 16-2, are No. 1, with Reno Hug, 13-6, at No. 2. Bishop Gorman is third at 16-4, with defending state champion Reno, 12-12, fourth. Bishop Gorman's girls, 17-3, pace the 4-A rankings, with Reno, 18-5, second and Las Vegas Centennial, 20-2, third. The Class 3-A rankings offer no real power in the boys' division. Mesquite Virgin Valley, 11-6, is first, with Dayton, 11-7, second. In the girls' ratings, Spring Creek, 17-1, is first, with Virgin Valley, 14-6, second. Lake Mead Christian Academy's boys, 14-6, pace the boys' 1-A ratings, with Owyhee -- the only undefeated team in any of the ratings at 17-0 -- second. Pahranagat Valley Alamo's girls, 14-6, top the 1-A list, with Southern League rival Lund second at 13-2. Pyramid Lake, 13-5, is third. A major problem affecting the ratings is the fact that not all teams have reported all scores to any of the acknowledged publications (Las Vegas Review-Journal and Reno Gazette-Journal) or Web sites (Nevadapreps.com and maxpreps.com). Which means standings cannot be accurately tabulated and strength of schedules cannot be determined. League standings will not be official until the end of the regular season, so that pairings can be made for regional tournaments. Officials from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, to determine which teams qualified, will have to call most of the state's schools to get those records. |
