Trojans battle; Durango's size decisive in win

Pahrump Valley's boys didn't back off the superior size of the Las Vegas Durango TrailBlazers Wednesday night, but the result was the same as the Trojans' previous eight starts in their first Southwest Class 4-A Division basketball campaign. The Trojans lost 88-54 to Durango, but they kept a partisan crowd entertained with their don't quit attitude. Pahrump Valley is 0-9 in the division, 7-15 in all games, with its next start at Las Vegas Sierra Vista tonight (6:30). Saturday, a rematch with Durango starts at 3 p.m. in Las Vegas. Marcus Falley scored 17 of the Trailblazers' first 21 points and Durango built quarter leads of 25-11, 40-21 and 67-32. Falley, a dynamic 6-foot-3 shooting guard, finished with 28 points, and Donovan Williams added 16. Marvin Weekly led Pahrump Valley with 23 points as he repeatedly took the action to Durango, which had at least three other players 6-6 or better on the floor at any given time. Alex Anderson added 11 points for coach Lonnie Shereck's team. In other Southwest games: Bishop Gorman 78, Spring Valley 75 -- At Gorman, Johnathan Loyd's 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer lifted the Gaels past the Grizzlies. Loyd, who finished with 17 points and seven assists, came down the middle of the court, veered to the left side and hit a pull-up jumper from just behind the arc as time expired. Shabazz Muhammad led the Gaels with 22 points. Kylel Coleman added 17 points and Czar Robotham 12 for Gorman. Xavier Grimble had 11 rebounds for the Gaels. Jesse Chippoletti finished with 20 points to lead Spring Valley, which rallied from a 45-32 halftime deficit. Tyler Lewis added 17 points and Corey Clement 10 for the Grizzlies. Western 70, Bonanza 66 -- At Bonanza, De'Andre Nash had 17 points as the Warriors, hitting 9 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter, held off the Bengals. Ehbert Talice added 16 points, Anterian Cannon scored 12 and Johnnie Diggs had 10 for Western, which was 17-for-23 from the line on the night. John Grady had 16 points to lead Bonanza, which was 4-for-9 from the line in the fourth quarter. Andrew Whiting added 14 points for the Bengals. Sierra Vista 55, Desert Oasis 41 -- At Sierra Vista, Quinten Chow scored 25 points, and the Mountain Lions put away the Diamondbacks with a 22-3 run to start the second half. Akeem Smith added 12 points for Sierra Vista, which led 30-23 at the half, then outscored Desert Oasis 10-0 in the third quarter. Cameron Jefferson led the Diamondbacks with 11 points. * Beatty 47, Trona (Calif.) 23 -- At Beatty, Anthony Regalado had 14 points to lead the Hornets to the win in a non-league boys' game.
