Genealogical Society

The Pahrump Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the LDS Church, corner of West Street and Wilson Road.

Bob Alvis will speak. His topic will be "The Hanseatic League."

Fish fry is back

Fundraiser for animal rescue

The Patio Cafe will sponsor a fundraiser for Big Dogs of Manse animal rescue 8-4 p.m. Feb. 7 at 670 W. Basin Ave.

They will be taking donations of dog food, either dry or canned, bedding and cash.

There will be local crafters, a chicken barbecue with all the fixin's and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the animal rescue.

Book Sale

The Friends of the Pahrump Library will conduct a book sale 9-5 p.m. Jan. 30 and 9-3 p.m. Jan. 31, at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 S. East St.

Over 4000 paperbacks and hard cover books will be for sale.

O-Mok-See

Rising Star Equestrian Association will offer another O-Mok-See on Jan. 31.

Sign-up starts at 9 am., and the event starts at 10.

The cost is $10 per entry for members of R.S.E.A., and $25 for non-members.

There will be a mutton bustin' event for ages 6 and under following the event.

Rebuilding Together

Rebuilding Together is seeking homeowners who need help with repairs, free of charge.

The volunteer organization helps those who need to stay warm, dry, safe and secure in their homes.

RCMS testing schedule

Rosemary Clarke Middle School will adhere to the following test schedule for students.

Feb. 18-23 -- Writing proficiency, eighth grade only;

Feb. 25 -- Nevada CRT, science, eighth grade only;

Feb. 26-27 -- Science make up for eighth grade only;

March 3 -- Math, sixth grade;

March 4 -- Math, seventh grade;

March 5 -- Math, eighth grade;

March 4-9 -- Math make up for grades 6-8;

March 10 -- Reading, sixth grade;

March 11 -- Reading, seventh grade;

March 12 -- Reading, eighth grade and

Grant-writing workshop

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop to assist people interested in applying for rural business enterprise grants. The grants are available to eligible public bodies, private nonprofit corporations and federally recognized Indian tribal groups to finance and facilitate development of small and emerging private business enterprises.

The workshop will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon, Feb. 4 at the Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North in Las Vegas.

Senior Center elects board

The Pahrump Senior Center will elect new board members at the end of February.

Teens and Money seminar

The NyE Communities Coalition will hold a seminar intended for youth 9-1 p.m., Feb. 17 in the NyE Communities Coalition building, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 101.

The seminar will deal with all areas of money management. Participants will learn how to set financial goals, budget to reach those goals and what to expect as typical costs of living independently.

It will also cover checking accounts, wise use of credit and the basics of investing.

Valentine's silent auction

New Hope Christian Academy will host a fundraiser from Feb. 6 through Feb. 13.

There will be a silent auction and a raffle for dinner at the Pahrump Valley Winery's Symphony's Restaurant.

Auction booklets will be available Friday, Feb. 6 and bids will end Thursday, Feb. 13. Raffle tickets for dinner at the Winery are $5.

Blood drive

The Pahrump Guns and Hoses will sponsor a blood drive 4-8 p.m., Feb. 6 and 8-1 p.m., Feb. 7 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Garden Club landscape tour

The Pahrump Valley Garden Club is planning the annual landscape tour to be held April 25.

Home landscapes south of Highway 372 are to be represented.

Those interested in having their home featured as part of the tour should call 751-0532 or 751-4785 by Jan. 31.

A variety of styles and landscapes, formal and informal, are encouraged.

Horse auction

The Nye County Animal Shelter will auction six horses beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 behind the sheriff's office, 171 N. Kittyhawk Drive.

The animals to be auctioned are :

Paint mare, 4 years old, halter broken;

Black mare, 9 years old, for use as a pet or brood mare due to a previous injury;

Dark bay mare, 13 years old, halter and saddle broken;

Buckskin gelding, 20 years old, needs TLC fro having been abandoned in the desert;

Bay mare, 20 years old, gentle and sweet;

Palomino gelding, 10 years old, sweet, has had knee surgery but can go on gentle rides.

These horses seem to be in generally good condition, however, Nye County makes no expressed or implied guarantee of temperment or health.

Winter/spring rummage sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a winter/spring rummage sale 8-4 p.m. Feb. 6 and 8-1 p.m. Feb. 7 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

Eastern Star meets

The chapter No. 32 Order of the Eastern Star will have its official visit from the state of Nevada grand officers at 10 a.m. Feb. 8 in the Masonic Lodge, 281 Gemini St.

Pahrump Computer Users

The Pahrump Computer Users group will meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

The program will be Vista tips, tricks and hidden treasures by Don Norvell and Mike Erwin will talk about high definition TV and have a large-screen demonstration of Blue Ray technology.

Parking in the rear of the library is preferred where there is ample room. Handicapped parking is still in the front.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Anyone wishing to become a member can pay a $5 annual membership fee when they check into the meeting and collect their raffle ticket.

Free tax return service

Pahrump tax aides are IRS trained counselors offering free tax return services beginning 9-3:30 p.m., every Wednesday and Saturday, Feb. 4 until April 22, at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B.

The service is open to young, low income taxpayers and seniors who may qualify for Earned Income Credit and are not receiving it.

Appointment a handicap or working-hour challenge may make other arrangement by appointment only. Appointments may be made via e-mail at fordpayne@juno.com.

Friends of the Library meet

The Pahrump Friends of the Library will meet at 9:15 Feb. 7 in the library conference room.

Representatives of Wells Fargo Bank will speak afterwards. Deborah Jones will discuss the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
