Goedhart's donations total $75,397
By MARK WAITE
Nevada District 36 Assemblyman Ed Goedhart, R-Amargosa Valley, faced almost token opposition from Democrat Scotty Babb, who campaigned very little prior to the Nov. 4 election, but he still collected $75,397 in the 2008 campaign, according to reports for the last year at the Nevada Secretary of State Elections Division. State Sen. Mike McGinness, R-Fallon, was unopposed in his quest for re-election Nov. 4 and facing his last term as a state senator under term limits, but he still collected $118,200 in contributions, in the period ending Oct. 28. McGinness doesn't have a report on file for the final period due Jan. 15. Candidates file their last campaign expense reports Jan. 15, which itemizes contributions over $100 for the last reporting since Oct. 28 and includes a grand total of contributions and expenses since Jan. 15, 2008. The last report is often overlooked as the hoopla of the election is over. Goedhart's contributions this campaign were less than the $147,600 he collected in winning his first term in November 2006, defeating Democrat Laurayne Murray. But his 2008 contributions amount to almost $5.13 for each of the 14,757 votes he collected. In McGinness' last opposed campaign in 2004, he collected $211,350 in contributions. McGinness went on to win 70 percent of the vote after that campaign. His Central Nevada Senatorial District includes all of Nye and Esmeralda counties. McGinness' campaign contributions in 2008 were almost evenly split between $57,200 collected in the first reporting period from Jan. 16 to Aug. 5, 2008, and $61,000 from Aug. 5 to Oct. 28, 2008. The deadline for candidates to file for office was in May, meaning a large amount of his contributions came despite the fact he didn't have an opponent. Goedhart collected $34,500 in contributions the first filing period from Jan. 15 to Aug. 5, 2008, another $28,097 from Aug. 5 to Oct. 28 and $12,750 in the last reporting period. All but $266 were in amounts of $100 or more. Goedhart reported spending $91,082 in the last year, or $6.17 per vote. Goedhart's last campaign report itemizes contributions of $1,500 from trash collector Republic Services of Southern Nevada and $1,000 apiece from Newmont Mining, C.R. Briggs Corp. of Trona, Calif., AT&T External Affairs, International Gaming Techologies and NVOS BonePAC, an organization of mostly health care providers based in Reno. In the last stretch of the campaign, Goedhart picked up another $500 each from the Builders Association of Northwestern Nevada, Carson Build PAC, Lewis and Roca law firm, Nevada Soft Drink Association, Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, DeLuca Liquor and Wine, R and R Partners Inc., Park PAC, Nevada Mining Association and McDonald, Carano and Wilson. Goedhart reported a $300 contribution from the George Flint Activity Fund, the president of the Nevada Brothel Owners Association, during the last reporting period. Corrections Corporation of America, a company interested in building a federal detention center in Pahrump, gave both Goedhart and McGinness $1,000 contributions during the 2008 campaign. Focus Property Group was still active in contributing to campaigns through political action committees, despite the downturn in the economy. The majority of contributions to statewide races comes from casino companies like Boyd Gaming, mining companies like Barrick and Newmont, along with trade organizations like the Association of General Contractors. Other candidates in the Nov. 4 elections had minimal contributions going from the last week of the campaign up to Jan. 15. Their total campaign donations and expenditures are as follows: Nye County Commission District 1 candidate Lorinda Wichman reported a total of $47,904 in contributions over the past year. Her opponent, Rob Mobley, said he wouldn't accept contributions, he paid out $9,093 in expenses. District 3 commissioner Gary Hollis tallied $39,137 in contributions, with a $500 contribution the last reporting period from the Goedhart for Assembly committee. Hollis reported spending $47,048. His opponent, Harley Kulkin, reported $18,414 in contributions and expenditures. District Judge John Davis accumulated $23,570 in campaign contributions the last year, he itemized a $500 contribution from the Reno law firm of Bradley, Drendel and Jeanney during the last reporting period. His challenger, Marla Zlotek, said she wouldn't accept campaign contributions. Pahrump Justice of the Peace Kent Jasperson reported $17,302 in total contributions and $14,982 in expenses. His last reporting period he picked up a $1,000 donation from Nye County Commissioner Joni Eastley. Other candidates filing forms for the Jan. 15 reporting period included: Justice of the peace candidate Linda DeMeo, $22,032 of in-kind contributions; county commission candidate Bruce Dole, $1,261 in contributions snd expenses; Pahrump town board member Vicky Parker, $1,344 in donations and $1,892 in expenses; justice of the peace candidate Louis De Canio, no donations and $2,361 in expenses; town board candidate Lu Komoroski, $1,420 in donations and $1,704 in expenses; town board candidate Don Rust, $441 in donations and $416 in expenses; and school board candidate Doc McNeely, no donations and $1,122 in expenses. |
