BOYS IN TOUGH LOSS TO CLARK Trojans' wild 4-A schedule resumes
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley won two of three Southwest Class 4-A girls' basketball games, to move into a tie with Sierra Vista and tonight's opponent -- Durango -- for third place in the division. Four games over the next six days could well determine the Lady Trojans' post-season fate. They play at home against the TrailBlazers tonight, go to Sierra Vista Friday and trek to Durango Saturday, before taking on homestanding -- and division-leading Bishop Gorman -- Monday. With eight division games remaining, the Lady Trojans are 5-3 after bowing 66-62 to second-place Bonanza and defeating Spring Valley 49-30 and Clark 57-18. In all games, the Jason Odegard-coached girls are 14-10. The Pahrump Valley boys went 0-4, losing three division starts (75-70 to Bonanza, 45-33 to Spring Valley and 45-42 to Clark), as well as a non-Southwest start 59-45 to former Class 3-A league rival Mesquite Virgin Valley. Coach Lonnie Shereck's team is 0-8 in the division, 7-14 in all games. Against Clark Monday night, senior center Kristi Daffer scored 23 points, with sophomore forward Casey Scheller adding 16. The PV girls led 16-2, 34-7 and 49-9 at the breaks. Odegard did not play his starting five as a unit after the first five minutes of the game. Friday, at Spring Valley, Scheller had 18 points and Daffer 15 to lead the Trojans over the Grizzlies, 49-30. Jessica Flores had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Spring Valley, which trailed 10-7, 25-15 and 41-21 at the quarters. Last Thursday at Pahrump Valley, Shirley Pitts scored a game-high 31 points and Christin Figgins added 13, as the Bengals held off the Trojans 66-62. Bonanza led 22-12 after one quarter, then had to fight off numerous PV threats to gain the win. Bonanza led 34-29 at the half and 48-43 going into the final eight minutes. Daffer had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Scheller had 18 points for Pahrump Valley. Alyson Kunzi scored 10 points for the Trojans. -- Monday night, Pahrump Valley's Mike Amburgey had a 55-foot desperation 3-pointer bounce off the rim at the final buzzer, in the heartbreaking loss to Clark. A small, but boisterous crowd rocked the PVHS gym, trying to spur the Trojans on to their first Class 4-A Division win ever. "It was a great atmosphere here, the best I have seen in this league," Clark coach Phil Shabi told Shereck. Alex Anderson had 11 points and Shane Lindemann came off the bench to add seven for the Trojans, who led 11-5 after one quarter, then trailed 23-16 at halftime before earning a 34-34 deadlock after three. Clark had only three players score, with Isidro Garcia pacing the Chargers with 19 points. The Trojans were competitive in all four games. Against Virgin Valley, they trailed 38-37 after three. The Bulldogs, however, clinched the win with a 13-0 run at the beginning of the fourth period. The Trojans trailed by three points late in the fourth quarter at Spring Valley, where the Grizzlies knocked in eight free throws down the stretch to win. Marvin Weekly had 28 points, Anderson added 16, Amburgey 11 and Tyler True 10 in the loss to Bonanza. The two teams combined for 54 points in the fourth quarter. |
