A lot can happen in 60 short minutes
By GINA B. GOOD
It's exhausting to watch Jack Bauer save the world one hour at a time on the popular TV series "24". How could anyone cram that much drama and so many subplots into a mere 60 minutes? Nothing like that really happens. Or does it? Here is a real-life, real-time 60 minutes look into the lives of Pahrump's first responders. These events occurred Jan. 23 and were handled by the Nye County Sheriff's Office (NCSO), Nye County Animal Control, Nye County Search and Rescue, Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service (PVF-RS) and Nevada Highway Patrol. Rollover 4:04 p.m., The police scanner next to Pahrump Valley Times Photo Editor Horace Langford Jr.'s desk broadcasts an urgent call from the NCSO dispatcher. "Rollover accident with person hanging out of the side of the vehicle." 4:08 p.m., Langford calls reporter Gina B. Good and tells her: "I'm headed out to a one-vehicle rollover accident on Bell Vista near Ash Meadows. It sounds bad. They called Becht to the scene." Good: "Do you need me?" "Not yet; I'll call." "OK, I'll monitor my scanner." 4:09 p.m., PVF-RS Rescue Engines 4 and 15 respond with Medic 2 Ambulance. NCSO to Dispatch: "We need traffic control out here. We're over the crest of a hill. People need to be aware before they get here." 4:11 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "There's no cell service out here. I need Capt. Becht. Position your car at the crest of this little hill so motorists don't come over this hill and crash into the emergency units." 4:14 p.m., The first PVF-RS emergency vehicle arrives. The driver of the smashed Jeep SUV is Nye County Sheriff's Office Investigator, Mike McGrath. His dog was also in the vehicle. Nye County Animal Control is called to the scene. Counterfeit bill 4:15 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "... at the bank ... exchanged $100 bill. We are mailing back to the Secret Service." Horses without riders 4:17 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "Two horses without riders ... they came from the desert and neighbors have them contained. I am going to go search for the riders. One of the horse's straps is broken. One horse is being kept on McGraw, the other one is at a home on Savoy." Rollover 4:19 p.m., Dispatch: "All hands page. All hands. Rollover accident." This call, as it pertains to the PVF-RS in addition to being transmitted by the dispatcher, comes by text to hand held devices. Horses without riders 4:19 p.m., NCSO on scene at Savoy: "We have a report that two little girls were previously seen riding. Notify Search and Rescue and get them on it." 4:21 p.m., Dispatch: "Search and Rescue notified." Pat Clowe, Search and Rescue Commander has his staff start the phone tree to reach team members. Emergency Service personnel are alerted and help gather resources for Search and Rescue. 4:26 p.m., Dispatch: "Female heard yelling for help on East Cheyenne." NCSO: "I can't get any farther in my car. I am proceeding on foot." Traffic stop Dispatch: "Negative wants. Registered to a woman out of Death Valley." Rollover 4:30 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "The vehicle is on its side. We are attempting to do a roof removal." Traffic stop 4:35 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "License called in; negative wants. In Baker; failure to yield to an emergency vehicle." Rollover 4:37 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "Get NHP to this location to take a report, please. If NHP cannot respond, get K-9 eight to come to this location. Also notify K-9 one. My cell has no service out here." 4:42 p.m., Dispatch: "Just FYI, NHP is responding to the accident." 4:50 p.m., Langford to Good: "The accident victim is a deputy. It's Mike McGrath. He's hurt but not injured badly. He's being transported into the hospital. I spoke to Becht, he said, 'Mike had his bell rung pretty good but he's conscious.'" Horses without riders 4:55 p.m., Animal Control 1 to Dispatch: "I am talking with some reidents here." 4:57 p.m., Animal Control or NCSO: "I spoke with the owner of the horses and had him go back to his residence, just in case the riders come back. He's at the address on Savoy." 5:00 p.m., Dispatch: "Where did you want Search and Rescue to meet?" NCSO: "Martin and Jean." Dispatch: "Copy." 5:01 p.m., NCSO to Dispatch: "I'm relocating to the other residence, just to make sure that individual is not there." Rollover 5:01 p.m., PVF-RS: "Medic two on location at Desert View." (McGrath arrives at hospital.) Horses without riders 5:04 p.m., NCSO or Animal Control to Dispatch: "They are back. They had an accident, but they are OK." All in one short hour. |
