First place in the Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division wrestling standings was at stake Thursday, when Pahrump Valley traveled to Las Vegas Bonanza for a dual meet.

The Trojans, 3-0 after beating two-time defending division champion Spring Valley 49-21 and Clark 55-24 Wednesday, tangled with the Bengals, 4-0 in the Southwest.

Coach Craig Rieger's team, 23-3 in all duals, is in Bullhead City, Ariz., for a series of seven dual matches today and Saturday.

Las Vegas, expected to be a prime contender for Nevada 4-A state team honors this season, is entered, as are Henderson Foothill, Spring Valley, Shadow Ridge, Basic, Boulder City and Laughlin.

Also entered are Agua Fria (Ariz.), Kingman, Parker, River Valley, Wickenburg, Bradshaw Mountain and San Pasqual, Calif., as well as host Mohave.

Spring Valley had won the 2007 and 2008 division titles without losing a match. The Trojans, after falling behind 9-0, won the next six matches and cruised to a relatively easy win against the Grizzlies.

The Trojans had seven pins (by Matt Rader, Josh Armendariz, Chris DeMille, Gueran Fenicle, Jared Lydon, Anderson Floyd, Zach Weldon and Joe Colucci) to more than offset six weight-class wins by Spring Valley.

Against Clark, the Trojans got pins from Armendariz, DeMille, Floyd, Weldon and Gourley, along with two forfeit wins.

"We're a blue-collar type team this year," said Rieger. "We're not big and strong team ... like a Gorman ... but they go out and get the job done."

Rieger was concerned with the Bonanza match, since the Trojans already had two non-division wins against the Bengals. "Get into a league match and you never know what to expect," said the veteran coach.

Remaining division dual matches are Jan. 27, at Sierra Vista, with Desert Oasis, and Jan. 29, at Western, with Durango.

The Sunset regionals are Feb. 6-7 at Bonanza, with the state tournament Feb. 13-14 at the Winnemucca Events Center.
