Friday

Who: Spring Valley vs. Pahrump Valley

What: Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A basketball doubleheader

When: 5 p.m. (girls) and 6:30 p.m. (boys)

Where: At Spring Valley High School, 3750 S. Buffalo (between W. Twain and W. Flamingo).

Records: Spring Valley boys, 2-4 division, 6-10 all games; PVHS, 0-5, 7-10; Spring Valley girls, 1-5, 1-7; PVHS 3-2, 12-9. Records are before games played Thursday.

Coaches: Spring Valley girls: Patricia Delfs; PVHS girls: Jason Odegard. Spring Valley boys: Phil McAllister; PVHS boys: Lonnie Shereck.

Key players: Spring Valley girls, no information available. Spring Valley boys: Esteban Gonzalez, 6-8 senior forward; Nate Holloway, 6-3 senior forward. PVHS girls: Kristi Daffer, 6-foot senior center; Casey Scheller, 5-10 sophomore forward; Ashley Lindgren, 5-5 sophomore guard. PVHS boys: Marvin Weekly, Alex Anderson, Mike Amburgey, Chase Williams, Daniel Shimakawa.

Bottom Line: Spring Valley's boys lost 52-51 to Bishop Gorman Dec. 16; edged Western 64-63 Jan. 16 and lost 68-61 to Desert Oasis, so don't expect the Grizzlies to back off. Spring Valley's girls edged Western 45-43, but lost 79-13 to Gorman and 55-32 to Sierra Vista; they are averaging 30 points per game.

The Pahrump Valley girls performance could depend on how they fared in a tough Southwest game Thursday at Bonanza. The boys have been outmanned physically all season; don't expect going up against the Grizzlies tonight will be any different.

Saturday

Mesquite Virgin Valley boys at Pahrump Valley, 5 p.m. (Preliminary boys games at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.)

This is a non-league game between these former Southern Nevada Class 3-A League rivals.

Virgin Valley has a new coach, Rich Bohne, who replaced the legendary Kirk Brotherson after the 2007-2008 season. The Bulldogs are 8-6, 1-1 in the league.

Key players for the Bulldogs are 6-3 Zack Horlacher, a junior post; 6-foot Terran Leavitt, a senior guard; 6-foot Jon Cleave, a senior forward; 6-6 Anthony Morris, a senior post, and 6-2 Colton Bulloch, a senior forward.

Bulldog conquests include Indian Springs (50-25), Lincoln County (68-60), The Meadows (75-68 and 61-51) and Henderson International School (49-33). The record includes losses to Henderson Basic (70-66 OT), Lincoln County (45-32 and 55-54) and Faith Lutheran (62-49).

Pahrump Valley and Virgin Valley had some heated battles over the final couple seasons the teams were 3-A league antagonists. Don't expect the separation of the Trojans and Bulldogs to lessen that intensity.
