Tour Death Valley's Titus Canyon

PVT

KEN LENGNER / Special to the PVT
The lower narrows of Titus Canyon have towering, 520-million-year-old rock walls only wide enough for one vehicle. Pictured here is the exit to Titus Canyon with the floor of Death Valley in the distance.

The Death Valley Natural History Association will host a tour of Titus Canyon, led by Death Valley author, historian, and naturalist Ken Lengner.

Lengner is the author of "Death Valley's Titus Canyon," and many other books about this region. "Death Valley's Titus Canyon" was recently reprinted and is available for sale at the DVNHA Furnace Creek Bookstore.

Titus Canyon Road passes through Death Valley's Grapevine Mountains. The route features amazing geological formations, petroglyphs, and the historic ghost town of Leadfield. Visitors at this time of year should see a display of spring wildflowers. Bring a camera, CB radio (optional), and lunch.

The tour will raise funds for education and research programs in Death Valley. The interpretive tour will start off Highway 374 at the entrance to Titus Canyon Road at 8 am, Saturday, Feb. 14th. Participants must drive a high-clearance vehicle with a spare tire and jack.

Pre-registration is required -- only a limited number of vehicles are permitted. The cost will be $100 per vehicle for DVNHA members and $120 per vehicle for non-members. Included in this price is a one-year membership.

Contact JJ Graham at 760-786-2146 ext. 10 to reserve a space or register online at www.dvnha.org.
