VFW in January

The VFW hosts a swap meet the second and fourth Saturday of each month 9-4 p.m. on the VFW grounds. The next meet will be Jan. 24. Call 727-6072 for information.

Be counted

If you are homeless, you need to be counted at a survey 10-1 p.m. Jan. 23 until Jan. 28 at the Pahrump Mental Health Center, 240 S. Humahuaca St.

There will be a survey to complete. The homeless numbers are submitted to HUD for additional money to aid the homeless.

Pruning workshop

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will host a pruning workshop at 9 a.m., Jan. 24 at 1651 E. Calvada Blvd, corner of Dandelion Street and Calvada Boulevard.

The topics covered will be roses, shrubs and trees. This is a hands on workshop. Bring gloves, hand pruners or hand saws.

The League of Women Voters of Pahrump will meet at 5:30 p.m., Jan. 21 in the JobConnect training room, 2101 E. Calvada Blvd.

Laurayne Murray will be the guest speaker for a look at details of the budget issues facing the state and discussion on steps the legislature may take to address them.

Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant

The Ms. Senior Nye County Pageant will be held April 18 at the Maverick, 340 E. Mesquite Ave.

The pageant is open to all ladies who have reached the elegant age of 60 plus.

Dancers, singers, comedy acts, poets, etc. are needed.

Super Bowl at the VFW

Watch the big football game Feb. 1 at the VFW post on Homestead Road. There are four TVs and snacks will be available.

Free tax return service

Pahrump tax aides are IRS trained counselors offering free tax return services beginning 9-3:30 p.m., every Wednesday and Saturday, Feb. 4 until April 22, at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B.

The service is open to young, low income taxpayers and seniors who may qualify for Earned Income Credit and are not receiving it.

Appointments must be made in order to keep from having to wait by calling 775-727-4258.

Those with handicap or working hour challenges may make other arrangement by appointment only. Appointments may be made via e-mail at fordpayne@juno.com.

Teens and Money seminar

The NyE Communities Coalition will hold a seminar intended for youth 9-1 p.m., Feb. 17 in the NyE Communities Coalition building, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 101.

The seminar will deal with all areas of money management. Participants will learn how to set financial goals, budget to reach those goals and what to expect as typical costs of living independently.

It will also cover checking accounts, wise use of credit and the basics of investing.

CASA recruiting volunteers

The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system.

A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement.

Volunteers must pass a background check and provide CASA with the minimum of a two-year commitment.

Grant-writing workshop

USDA Rural Development will hold a workshop to assist people interested in applying for rural business enterprise grants. The grants are available to eligible public bodies, private nonprofit corporations and federally recognized Indian tribal groups to finance and facilitate development of small and emerging private business enterprises.

The workshop will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon, Feb. 4 at the Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North in Las Vegas.

Laureate Omicron Meets

Pahrump Computer Users

The Pahrump Computer Users group will meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

The program will be Vista tips, tricks and hidden treasures by Don Norvell and Mike Erwin will talk about high definition TV and have a large-screen demonstration of Blue Ray technology.

Parking in the rear of the library is preferred where there is ample room. Handicapped parking is still in the front.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Anyone wishing to become a member can pay a $5 annual membership fee when they check into the meeting and collect their raffle ticket.
