Bottom line

Pahrump Valley's girls, at 2-2, are fifth in the Southwest with 12 division games to play in their first-ever Class 4-A campaign. The top four teams in each division advance to the regionals.

Sweeping Desert Oasis, Clark, Western and Spring Valley -- the teams ranked below them -- would give the Trojans eight division wins. That won't be enough for them to advance to the regionals.

The top four teams are Bishop Gorman, Bonanza, Durango and Sierra Vista. Pahrump Valley has yet to play Bonanza and Durango and is 0-1 against the Gaels and Mountain Lions.

Pahrump Valley's boys, winless in the division, have 12 Southwest games remaining. The Trojans play aggressive, hustling basketball, but they have been going up against bigger, stronger opponents.

Even Desert Oasis, a first-year Las Vegas high school, has superior size and strength, witness the D'backs' conquest of Bonanza.
