CHEYENNE PACES BOYS Gorman girls lead Times hoop ratings
Defending Class 4-A state champion Las Vegas Bishop Gorman leads the first Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School girls' basketball ratings. The rankings will be published each Friday through Feb. 13. The final lists will appear in the Times Feb. 18. The Lady Gaels are 12-3 and are ranked ahead of Reno, 13-5, in the 4-A Top 10. Centennial is third and Bonanza is fourth. The top-ranked boys' team is 2008 state runnerup Las Vegas Cheyenne, 11-1. Reno Hug, 11-5, Sierra Vista 15-3 and Reno Bishop Manogue, 12-6, complete the top four. In Class 3-A, state champion Yerington, 14-0 despite a knee injury that sidelined Lions star Karrie-Ann Quartz, tops the girls ratings. Overton Moapa Valley, 9-4, is No. 1 in the boys ratings. The Virgin Valley girls, 13-4, are second and early Northern League leader Sparks, 6-5, is second in the boys' rankings. Defending state champion Lincoln County, 8-5, and Needles, Calif., 14-5, are 1-2 in the 2-A boys' ratings. Pershing County Lovelock, 11-3, and Lincoln County, 13-1, pace the girls' rankings. In Class A, Lake Mead Christian Academy's boys, 10-6, are ranked first, with Owyhee, 13-0, second. Lund, 9-1, and Owyhee, 4-1, are 1-2 in the girls ratings. The ratings serve as an indicator of which teams to watch for the next four weeks, as the post-season approaches. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned playoffs to begin the week of Feb. 16, with the state tournament dates Feb. 26-27-28. Las Vegas will be the state tournament's host city, with all finals to be played in The Orleans Arena Feb. 28. Regional dates: North Class A: Feb. 19-21 at North Valleys and Wooster High Schools in Reno; South Class A: Feb. 17 at host sites; Feb. 20, semifinals at Durango; Feb. 21, finals at Desert Oasis. North Class 2-A: Feb. 19-21 at sites to be announced, plus North Valleys and Wooster. South Class 2-A: Feb. 20-21, at Desert Oasis. North Class 3-A: Feb. 19-21, at Sparks Reed. South Class 3-A: Feb. 19 and 21, at Desert Oasis. North Class 4-A: Feb. 17 and 18, at host sites; Feb. 19-20-21, at Sparks Spanish Springs. Sunrise Class 4-A: Feb. 17 and 18, at host sites; Feb. 19-20, at Henderson Liberty. Sunset Class 4-A: Feb. 17 and 18, at host sites; Feb. 19-20, at Palo Verde. The Orleans Arena: It will host all Class 1-A and 4-A games, as well as the 2-A and 3-A finals. Sierra Vista will be the site for the 2-A semifinals, Desert Oasis the 3-A semis. |
