NCMA meeting canceled The Nevada Country Music Association, Nye County chapter will not be holding a meeting in January. There will be a meeting in February, date and time to be determined. Book Sale The Friends of the Pahrump Library will conduct a book sale 9-5 p.m. Jan. 30 and 9-3 p.m. Jan. 31, at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 S. East St. Over 4000 paperbacks and hard cover books will be for sale. Check out the "Friends Book Room." Attention crafters A new group of crafts people is forming. After getting organized, the mission will be to find ways to promote the group and the products, and generate sales as a business and not just through occasional craft fairs. Artisans of all mediums are welcome and include painters, fabric arts, silver- and goldsmiths, woodworkers, beaders, makers of cosmetics, candles, soap and other bath products and other handcrafted items. Host a student The NWS Peace program, a nonprofit and CSIET-approved program, is seeking families to host a high school student from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Vietnam, Belgium, Finland and other countries for the 2009 school year. Students are 15-18 years old, are pre-screened, speak English, have medical insurance and spending money for clothes, school supplies and entertainment. Host families are not paid but may be able to claim a $50 per-month tax deduction for charitable contributions. Students require a bed, meals and a caring family. The proceeds support the no kill rescue. They ask the public to spay and neuter pets. PVCAT mission statement The PVCAT has revised its mission statement to read: "The Pahrump Valley Community Action Team is organized to assist in planning, developing and implementing strategies that will promote Pahrump and give Pahrump a sense of community and community spirit." Entertainment will be provided by Steve Rossi, Nevada Silver Tappers and Tom Saitta and Friends. Special presentations will be made for community volunteer of the year, chamber volunteer of the year, cornerstone awards for business and nonprofit and a legend in our community award. The cost will be $45 per person or $360 per table of eight. Once a month, PVCC publishes "The Chamber Page" in the Pahrump Valley Times. The bottom third of this full page is a promotional opportunity open to chamber members to display business cards. The cost is $100 per quarter and six spots are currently available. Manse PTO needs volunteers The Manse Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization is looking for members of the community who might have knowledge, skills or abilities they can share with the students at Manse through the after school enrichment program. They are looking for activities to enhance student education which are not offered as part of the curriculum. Currently scheduled are geology, cheerleading, drum lessons, and crafts made from recycled materials. Classes begin in the spring. Deadline to participate is Jan. 20. Free Radon test kits Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office and the Nevada State Health Division are offering free testing kits. The kits will be available for a limited time. Women support groups No To Abuse is offering two support groups for women: A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence meets from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence or armed forces related trauma will meet from 1-3 p.m. on Thursdays. Meetings will be held at No to Abuse, 621 S. Blagg Road. CASA recruiting volunteers The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system. A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement. At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available. Notice to veterans Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917, to the present, have an office in Pahrump and Tonopah to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits. The Pahrump office is located in JobConnect in the Calvada Eye, Building A. Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits. The hours are 8-5 p.m. at the office locations or call 537-2323. Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling. Community choir meeting The Pahrump Community Choir meets from 7-9 p.m. each Wednesday at the Rosemary Clarke Middle School music room. Anyone who likes to sing is welcome. Wal-Mart Wall of Heroes If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the south wall, bring an 8x10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk. This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. Pahrump Rotary Club The Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley meets at noon every Wednesday in the Pahrump Nugget banquet hall. Rotary members are a dedicated group of people serving in the community. Power wheelchairs The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. Melanoma Fighters Club "Mandy's Melanoma Fighters Club" seeks two to three preteen and teenagers from each middle and high school in Pahrump to promote melanoma and skin cancer awareness in their school. Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas. VHRU maintains a Web site describing the mission and providing information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The Web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 30 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. CPR and first aid classes The Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services will hold CPR and first aid classes 6-9 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. Angels Have Wheels All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Power wheelchairs Miracle on Wheels makes available electric power wheelchairs to non-ambulatory senior citizens 65 and older and the permanently disabled of any age, if they qualify. Electric wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and also cannot operate a manual wheelchair sufficiently or safely enough to care for themselves in their residence.
