Great cooks Great cooks are wanted to prepare favorite New Orleans recipes Feb. 21 at the Mardi Gras Celebration. Friends of the Library meet The Pahrump Friends of the Library will meet at 9:15 Feb. 7 in the library conference room. Representatives of Wells Fargo Bank will speak afterwards. Deborah Jones will discuss the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Scott Sathrum will discuss potential investment opportunities and Sandy Rhody will discuss and define reverse mortgages. All are welcome. For more information call Edward Underhill at 727-9823. NCSD Open House The Nye County School District will have an open house 4-6 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Transportation Office, 1900 S. Woodchips Road. There will be tours of the newly remodeled building and refreshments. Model train meeting The Pahrump Valley Model Train Club will meet from 9 a.m. until everyone goes home, Jan. 17 in the United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Highway 372. Contemporary worship service Saved by Grace Lutheran Church will host a contemporary worship service at 11 a.m. Jan. 18 in the multi-purpose room of Mt. Charleston Elementary. Women's self-defense class The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes will sponsor another two-day women's self-defense class 8-4 p.m. Jan. 17 and 18 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Learn techniques on what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away from an attacker; how to neutralize an attacker and what to do and not do if you are attacked. After getting organized, the mission will be to find ways to promote the group and the products, and generate sales as a business and not just through occasional craft fairs. Artisans of all mediums are welcome and include painters, fabric arts, silver- and goldsmiths, woodworkers, beaders, makers of cosmetics, candles, soap and other bath products and other handcrafted items. Introduction to Ham Radio The Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Services will offer an introduction to Ham Radio class in preparation for the licensing test at 8 a.m. Jan. 17 in the offices, 1510 Siri Lane. The class is for the technician license only. To take the test, which will follow the class, bring a photo ID or two non-photo IDs and $15. Call 910-9995 for more information. PVRR banquet rescheduled The Pahrump Valley Rough Rider award banquet has been changed to 3 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Bob Ruud Community Center. Members are encouraged to attend. The group will also be voting for officers for the upcoming year. RCMS testing schedule Rosemary Clarke Middle School will adhere to the following test schedule for students. It is important that students be in school on these dates, schedule other appointments accordingly. Jan. 27-28 -- Terra Nova, seventh grade only; Jan. 29 -- N.A.E.P., eighth grade only; Feb. 18-23 -- Writing proficiency, eighth grade only; Feb. 25 -- Nevada CRT, science, eighth grade only; Feb. 26-27 -- Science make up for eighth grade only; March 3 -- Math, sixth grade; March 4 -- Math, seventh grade; March 5 -- Math, eighth grade; March 4-9 -- Math make up for grades 6-8; March 10 -- Reading, sixth grade; March 11 -- Reading, seventh grade; March 12 -- Reading, eighth grade and March 11-16 -- Reading make up for grades 6-8. Pahrump chamber announcements Jan. 15 -- Round Table Discussion, noon, Pahrump chamber office, limited to eight members. Open discussion on your business issues/challenges -- dialog and exploring possible solutions with Lucy Ivins and Ed Maznicki (SCORE). Bring your own lunch, no cost. Jan. 16 -- Board installation dinner, 5:30 p.m., Pahrump Nugget. Entertainment will be provided by Steve Rossi, Nevada Silver Tappers and Tom Saitta and Friends. Special presentations will be made for community volunteer of the year, chamber volunteer of the year, cornerstone awards for business and nonprofit and a legend in our community award. The cost will be $45 per person or $360 per table of eight. Once a month, PVCC publishes "The Chamber Page" in the Pahrump Valley Times. For more information call Nancy, 727-5800. Food drive The Nye County Emergency Services will be holding another food drive 10-2 p.m. Jan. 17 in the parking lot at Smith's Food & Drug on Highway 160. They will also have disaster preparedness information. Non-perishable items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, noodles and rice and canned meats, fruits, soups and vegetables. MLK scholarship fundraiser The All Peoples Breakfast Celebration, in honor of the late Martin Luther King Jr., will be 8:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center. There will be entertainment, door prizes, raffles and a silent auction. Tickets for the breakfast are $10 in advance and are available at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce. Call Dee, 537-0396, for more information. Pet adoptions The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. the first and second Saturday of each month at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160. The fees for adopting a dog are $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten are $55. Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license.
