MESA, Ariz. -- Tonopah High School junior Denver Otteson attended the Max Zendejas kicking camp here in December.

During the camp there was a kicking competition between all the campers. They kicked from many different distances and locations.

Otteson, who was on a Tonopah team that was Nevada Class A Eight-Man football state runnerup this past season, ended up as the top high school kicker, missing only one kick in the competion. One of his boots was from 50 yards out.

After all the high school kickers competed, Otteson competed against against two Division 1-A college kickers in the final round.

From Arizona State was Zack Richards and from Arizona was Alex Zendejas.

Otteson did well against the college kickers but came up short as Richards won the finals. In the final round against the college kickers Otteson hit a 48-yarder.

"Denver is a solid kicker, he has a very strong leg and should be a great kicker at the next level," said Max Zendejas, who kicked for the Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers in the 1980s.

"It was amazing that Denver is able to kick as well as he does after playing a entire game of both offense (as a running back and receiver) and defense (as a linebacker)," said Zendejas. "Most of the kickers at the camp are just kickers for their high school teams and are fresh when they go out to kick in a game."

This past season, Otteson was 38-for-40 on point-after-touchdown attempts, and he was 4-for-6 on field goals. He was all-Southern 1-A first team in both offense and defense.

In the 2009 season, Otteson is expected to play quarterback for the Curt McElroy-coached Muckers, as they seek to advance to the state finals for the fourth consecutive season.

Otteson will attend the seventh Annual Chris Sailer National kicking camp/combine in Las Vegas Jan. 17-18. He will compete against more than 120 juniors from around the country.

Otteson is still raising money for the next camp; anyone interested in sponsoring him should call 775-482-5650 or 775-482-4459.
