TOURNAMENT AT CENTENNIAL TODAY, SATURDAY Trojans stop Gorman in 4-A debutFIVE PINS POWER VICTORY; WELDON WIN STREAK ENDS
By DON McDERMOTT
As the thrill of victory still had a huge crowd celebrating, Pahrump Valley wrestling coach Craig Rieger eased back into reality. A 46-25 victory against Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division power Las Vegas Bishop Gorman was tempered by the Trojans' schedule. Today and Saturday, the Trojans are in the prestigious Bulldog Growler at Centennial High School in Las Vegas. Among the opposing teams are the host Bulldogs, who handed the Trojans one of their three dual-meet losses this season, along with Sunrise Northeast power Las Vegas and a Class 5-A squad from Syracuse, Utah. The Trojans don't wrestle next week, but on Jan. 21, they travel to Las Vegas again to resume Southwest competition. PVHS will take on Spring Valley -- a preseason choice, along with Gorman, to win the division title -- and Clark in a triangular meet. Other division meets will be Jan. 27 at Sierra Vista (with Desert Oasis) and Jan. 29 (at Western, with Durango). With more than 400 fans -- the largest non-state tournament wrestling crowd ever at PVHS -- fired up and ready to cheer every move, the Trojans rose to the occasion. The Trojans, who claimed the Nevada Class 3-A state team championship in 2007-2008, won five matches by pin to down the Gaels and win their first-ever 4-A division dual meet. Elliott Owens (112 pounts), Chris DeMille (135), Travis Lindsay (152), Anderson Floyd (160) and Joey Colucci (189) won by pin for the Trojans, who improved to 16-3 in duals this season. DeMille, Lindsay and Floyd each won in less than a minute, with Floyd recording the quickest pin in 36 seconds. Gorman's John Field handed Pahrump's Zach Weldon his first loss of the season in the 171-pound match. Field edged Weldon, who now is 17-1 and has won 71 of his last 74 matches. Field improved to 28-3. Paul Miller (130), Gueran Fenicle (140) and Ryan Holt (215) also won for the Trojans. The varsity meet was supposed to start at 6 p.m., but was delayed until after 8. The PV junior varsity won 43-27 in a full 14-weight-class preliminary, and the two teams split 4-4 in exhibition matches. "We had several boys step up tonight ... Paul, Travis and Gueran," said Rieger. His team is now 16-3 in all duals this season. * In Sunset Region Northwest matches, Cimarron-Memorial dominated a pair of dual meets Wednesday at Arbor View, beating Centennial 50-15 and Arbor View 72-12. The other meet saw Centennial rout Arbor View, 54-19. Cimarron posted 16 pins on the day. Bronson Ashjian (103 pounds) and Aaron Garcia (189) each recorded two pins. Colby Garrison (135) also was a double winner, winning by pin against Arbor View and with a 17-2 decision against Centennial. Arbor View's Robert Ireland (112) had two pins. Brady Worden (125), who won by pin against Arbor View and with a 14-12 decision over Cimarron, paced Centennial. |
