Pahrump Valley's objective, said coach Lonnie Shereck, was to play hard as it could to the final buzzer and not give in to the obvious strength of the visiting Las Vegas Bishop Gorman boys' basketball team Tuesday night.

The Trojans did just that against the Gaels, the prohibitive favorites to win the Sunset Region Southwest Division title and make a run at the Nevada Class 4-A state championship.

The Gaels, who featured 6-foot-7 Tim Carter, 6-6 Xavier Grimble and 6-3 freshman sensation Shabazz Muhammad, won 82-52, are 9-3 in all games and advanced their division record to 3-0.

Pahrump Valley, which played at home Thursday night against division rival Sierra Vista and travel to Las Vegas Western today, is 7-7 in all games and 0-2 in the division.

"I was happy with the way the boys played tonight ... they battled to the finish," said Shereck. "We had Mike (Amburgey) out because of an illness in the family and (Shane) Lindemann was sick, so we were short-handed."

Muhammad scored 17 points to help the Gaels beat the Trojans. John Loyd added 12 points and seven assists for Gorman, which led 26-15, 46-28 and 68-37 at the breaks. Kylel Coleman added 14 points, Anson Winder 12 and Alex Turner 10 rebounds.

Marvin Weekly scored 17 points for Pahrump Valley, which had Tyler True add 10 points. Chase Williams had eight points.

* In the girls game, Aaryon Ellenberg's defense and quickness kept Gorman in contention in the first half. When teammate Dannielle Diamant, a 6-foot-4 center, got into the mix, both offensively and in rebounding in the second half, the Lady Gaels were dominating.

Which was why the defending Nevada Class 4-A champions rolled to a 74-36 conquest of Pahrump Valley Tuesday night.

Bishop Gorman is 3-0 in the division, while the Trojans dropped to 1-1. Pahrump Valley, which has lost six of its last seven starts, was 10-8 when the Lady Trojans played at home against division foe Sierra Vista Thursday.

Coach Jason Odegard's team travels to Las Vegas Western today for another Southwest game.

Ellenberg scored 23 points, with six of her 10 field goals coming off steals. Diamant, who attacked both boards in the second half after being relatively ineffective in the first half, finished with 21 points.

Kristi Daffer had 12 points and junior guard Toi Simmons added nine for Pahrump Valley, which was behind 15-8 and 29-25 at the first two breaks. The Gaels outscored the Trojans 28-7 in the third period to take away the suspense.

Yahindra Edwards scored 11 points and Mackenzie Butler added 10 for the Gaels.
