Pet adoptions

The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. the first and second Saturday of each month at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160.

The fees for adopting a dog are $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten are $55.

Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license.

Amargosa fire victims need donations

Fire destroyed the Amargosa Valley home of the Pinon family on Dec. 23.

Although immediate needs have been met, donations are still needed for a TV stand, curtains for a large picture window, floor and table lamps, a propane stove, bed linens and blankets for both queen- and king-sized beds, cookware and drinking glasses.

EAA meets

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will meet at 10 a.m. Jan. 10 at Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Helicopter Road and Jet Place.

The program will feature a demonstration of assembling and testing 3000 psi aircraft hydraulic hose.

Attention crafters

A new group of crafts people is forming. After getting organized, the mission will be to find ways to promote the group and the products and generate sales as a business and not just through occasional craft fairs.

Artisans of all mediums are welcome and include painters, fabric arts, silver- and goldsmiths, woodworkers, beaders, makers of cosmetics, candles, soap and other bath products and other handcrafted items.

Free Radon test kits

Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, is a cancer-causing radioactive gas.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office and the Nevada State Health Division are offering free testing kits.

The kits will be available for a limited time.

Women's self-defense class

The Nye County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Heroes will sponsor another two-day women's self-defense class 8-4 p.m. Jan. 17 and 18 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Learn techniques on what to watch for and how to be aware of your surroundings; what to do if an attacker surprises you; how to get away from an attacker; how to neutralize an attacker and what to do and not do if you are attacked.

The Pahrump Springs chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 10 a.m. Jan. 14 in the library.

Pahrump chamber announcements

Jan. 12 -- Chamber luncheon, 11:45 a.m., Nevada Treasure Luxury RV Resort; tickets are $10; speakers will be Town Manager Bill Kohbarger and Nye County Manager Richard Osborne.

Jan. 15 -- Round Table Discussion, noon, Pahrump chamber office, limited to eight members.

Open discussion on your business issues/challenges -- dialog and exploring possible solutions with Lucy Ivins and Ed Maznicki (SCORE). Bring your own lunch, no cost.

Jan. 16 -- Board installation dinner, 5:30 p.m., Pahrump Nugget. Entertainment will be provided by Steve Rossi, Nevada Silver Tappers and Tom Saitta and Friends. Special presentations will be made for community volunteer of the year, chamber volunteer of the year, cornerstone awards for business and nonprofit and a legend in our community award.

The cost will be $45 per person or $360 per table of eight.

Once a month, PVCC publishes "The Chamber Page" in the Pahrump Valley Times. The bottom third of this full page is a promotional opportunity open to chamber members to display business cards. Food drive

The Nye County Emergency Services will be holding another food drive 10-2 p.m. Jan. 17 in the parking lot at Smith's Food & Drug on Highway 160.

They will also have disaster preparedness information.

Non-perishable items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, noodles and rice and canned meats, fruits, soups and vegetables.

MLK scholarship fundraiser

The All Peoples Breakfast Celebration, in honor of the late Martin Luther King Jr., will be 8:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Pahrump Nugget Events Center.

There will be entertainment, door prizes, raffles and a silent auction.

Tickets for the breakfast are $10 in advance and are available at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Volunteer training

Nathan Adelson Hospice will offer volunteer training classes 9-5 p.m. Jan. 26 and 27 in the hospice conference room, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900.

Prostate cancer support

A chapter of US-TOO International Prostate Cancer Support will hold their first meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Pahrump Library.

Women support groups

No To Abuse is offering two support groups for women: A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence meets from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence or armed forces related trauma will meet from 1-3 p.m. on Thursdays.

Meetings will be held at No to Abuse, 621 S. Blagg Road.

CASA recruiting volunteers

The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system.

A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement.

Volunteers must pass a background check and provide CASA with the minimum of a two-year commitment.

Host a student

The NWS Peace program, a nonprofit and CSIET-approved program, is seeking families to host a high school student from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Vietnam, Belgium, Finland and other countries for the 2009 school year.

Students are 15-18 years old, are pre-screened, speak English, have medical insurance and spending money for clothes, school supplies and entertainment.

Host families are not paid but may be able to claim a $50 per-month tax deduction for charitable contributions.

Students require a bed, meals and a caring family.

Early placement is key and students must be matched with a family by July 1.

Scout uniforms and equipment

Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated.

Legal services

The Family Resource Center has partnered with Nevada Legal Services to provide low income residents with a virtual attorney service.

At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available.

All necessary forms and assistance in completing them is provided by Nevada Legal Services attorneys.

The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students.

Garden Club meets

The Pahrump Valley Garden Club will meet 9:30-11 a.m. Jan. 10 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

The featured topic will be salt cedar trees with guest speaker Mark James who will explain why they are undesirable and how to eradicate them.

Introduction to Ham Radio

The Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Services will offer an introduction to Ham Radio class in preparation for the licensing test at 8 a.m. Jan. 17 in the offices, 1510 Siri Lane.
