Two new members will likely replace incumbents on the Beatty Town Advisory Board as a result of the advisory election held Wednesday evening.

Joe White and LaRene Younghans will take the seats formerly held by LaMar Walters and Joannie Jarvis.

Bert Bertram, the other incumbent up for reappointment, will retain his position on the board.

The Community Center was packed with residents for the election, which saw over 160 of them cast ballots.

In applying for the position, Younghans provided a resume that included 30 years as a manager for AT&T and service on the Beatty Town Advisory Council (predecessor of the current board), Nye County Board of Equalization, Southern Nye County Conservation District, Cooperative Weed Management Area, Amargosa Toad Working Group, Nevada Rural Health Centers Board and Friends of the Beatty Airport.

"My husband, George and I have owned property in Beatty since 1981 and moved here full time in 1985. My main concerns are the Beatty Clinic, Beatty EMT Service, the Beatty Airport and sensible growth."

White had kept it short: "I am a long-time resident of Beatty and have served on this board in the past. Now that I am semi-retired, I am certain I can give the attention and detail this position deserves while making decisions that will benefit all the residents in Beatty."

The election process was handled by Jan Cameron, chairman of the Amargosa Valley Town Advisory Board, and seven assistants she brought with her.

The Nye County commissioners requested the advisory election to help them choose who to appoint from among the five applicants for the three open seats.

After the votes were counted, Cameron announced the following results: Joe White, 121; LaRene Younghans, 115; Bert Bertram, 97; LaMar Walters, 70; and Joannie Jarvis 59.

When the voters and audience, almost all of whom had stayed to hear the results, gave Cameron and her crew a round of applause and thanked them for their help, she responded, "That's what neighbors do."

The names of the top three vote-getters were forwarded to the county commissioners for appointment.
