Legacy edges Centennial in Northwest gameNEVADAPREPS.COM
LAS VEGAS -- Legacy was a surprise success during football season. Now the Longhorns' boys basketball team might follow suit. Ira Haywood's put-back as time expired in the second overtime lifted Legacy to a 65-64 victory over visiting Centennial in a Sunset Region Northwest Division game Monday. A year after Legacy went 3-11 in the Northwest League, it is 2-0 in the league for the first time in the three-year history of the program. "As long as we play together as a team, we should be in the playoffs and make a good run this year," said guard Delroy Gibbs, who scored 19 points. Janette said the final play, "a double screen to get a wide-open shot," was run for Gibbs. Haywood, who had three points, came up with the ball after Gibbs' missed shot and a scramble under the basket to put in the game winner. Samuel Johnson scored 19 points and nine rebounds for Legacy. Terrell Evans added 13 points, 17 rebounds and five steals. Matt Holley led Centennial with 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Ben Vozzola added 16 points, and Drew Staker supplied 12 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Centennial led 46-41 early in the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns closed the period with a tying 10-5 run. In the first overtime, Gibbs' layup tied the score at 57. In the second, Beau Scarlett hit two free throws with 25 seconds left to give Centennial a 64-63 lead that lasted only until Haywood got his hands on the ball. |
